I have not been getting much sleep the past five years and I would like to know how beneficial it is.I tried researching and I get conflicting claims on what sleep is good for. Sorry for making this topic as a level 1 as well but I really need to know this and thought I would inquire here.

It helps your brain regain energy, your body regain energy, process your day, your thoughts and more. You can die if you don't get enough sleep. You can also become temporarily insane if you don't sleep enough. Most teenagers need around 10 hours of sleep, babies need around 22 hours of sleep and most adults can do with only 5 hours of sleep per day. 8 hours is the recommended amount of sleep you should get.

Can you get too much sleep? Also if you do not sleep good is there a way to go to sleep besides medication or if there is medication is there medication that is safe and healthy?

There is a reason it's called beauty sleep.

Does it help with anxiety, I know it supposedly helps with focus but that might concentrate my anxiety and I get scared at that though. Thank you for the replies so far by the way.

Maybe it helps but wouldn't it also possibly just focus the anxiety? I am not really sure, I will admit I am not very intellectual.

You can get too much sleep, but then we're talking like 20 hours a day as an adult. You can't die from sleeping too much. You can ask your doctor for sleeping hormone pills, called Melatonin. It's a natural occurrence in the body that starts developing around natural hours in your body's daily schedule, around the time you get tired. The body starts developing it more often with the decrease of daylight, so you're more sleepy in winter; this is called a winter depression, if your body develops too much.

You can get Melatonin at GNC as well.

Your brain starts degenerating if you have only slept, say, two hours the past 48 hours. It's simply not very healthy. But you shouldn't start getting anxious about it, because that doesn't help your body. You can try taking short naps during the day if you sleep bad at night. Any amount of time from 2 minutes to 30 minutes for a nap is always very healthy, as you can stay up for 10 hours longer due to the short rest. If napping doesn't help, try and make it mandatory to go to bed at 10am, and turn off your TV, PC and other such related things around 9:30, this gives your mind time to process whatever you have been doing, so you don't have a lot of things going on in your head.

Personally I wouldn't take any supplement drugs without the doctor's consent, but that's just me who's overly paranoid about stuff like that. Melatonin isn't dangerous to the body, and taking one 3mg pill before bed isn't dangerous (that's the kind of melatonin pills I have, from my psychiatrist). Since it's a hormone, your body will take care of it.

I totally agree with you. My psychiatrist recommended them for me. Even though can't overdose on them it is always good to make sure like you said.

Because some people aren't as educated as you seem to be in the human body and how it works.

Did you see that guy who made KONY2012? I'm guessing part of the problem was lack of sleep. Don't sleep and you start running around naked in public.

Sleep is only important to those who lead crappy or strenuous lives. I hate going to sleep and I hate not being able to wake up when I do.

I was just watching a program about a disease called FFI which can hit people suddenly but usually once they are 40-50+. It's a genetic disease and the people just cant go to sleep. As a result they usually only live about 18 months after diagnosis and half the time they are in an almost hallucinogenic state towards the end.

It's extremely important. There are studies that suggest that some medical conditions associated with old age are actually caused by the fact that as you get older your deep sleep phase decreases.
