This year to me has been one of the better years for music this decade.

Overall, decent though.

I think as a whole it's terrible. The only time mainstream music was worse was the 80s. At least the 90s had grunge.

I dispise much of our current music, it just sounds like crap and hurts my head. Not to mention everyone sounds exactly the same and all those idiots with the guyliner and dirty bedhair.

I'm gonna say Hairbands > Guyliner

In terms of the music I listen to, it's pretty much the same. I like a wide range of stuff going from 1920's delta blues to folk metal, so each decade really just brings different sounds and genres. As for the mainstream, it's been going downhill since the dawn of MTV, to the point MTV has since distanced itself from mainstream music.

I'd say its the best ever. With the advent of teh interwebs it's easier to find (good) music than ever, and as a result artists are no longer limited by their label. It's easy to dismiss the 00's because of *insert mainstream garbage here*, but if you do a little searching there is some truly incredible music being made these days.

I think the 90s were better than the 80s imo. Much more interesting progressive music, the 80s just had the depressingly bad Genesis and Yes pop that ruined the bands.

I don't listen to mainstream music...I find my own. But it still doesn't compare. Nothing too innovative (if innovative at all)...just some lightweight music that while pleasant isn't setting the world on fire.

Yes, I do like brit-pop and most of the british music scene (minus oasis). Other then that, I can't say I love that much from the 90's.

I guess I better amend my previous statement. This decade has been better the most, least in the underground scene. Some truly creative bands (GY!BE, Sigur, RH, Twilight Sad) have released spectacular albums. I think mainstream sucks worse then ever though.

If you have the capacity to search out non mainstream bands now...then maybe you should do the same with the past decades. Some great alternative music developed in the 80's that aren't as prolific in the media then or now. I'm rather surprised that someone interested in music as you are edit the 80's down to Genesis and Yes.

I didnt narrow down the whole decade, I just said that in terms of progressive music I found the 90s more interesting. Sure there were some interesting progressive music made in the 80s, but the 90s was when progressive metal really started to take off. I wasnt talking about alternative music, though if you have any suggestions I would be glad to hear them:)

Ah well...when you spoke of music per decade I assumed you would have taken most of it into account and not one subgenre.

Thread wise overall I am, I just was talking about Prog in general in that post. Again I do welcome any new bands, I never really got into 80s alternative.

Uh, MIA is a pretty good artist...In a weird/quirky kind of way. That single isn't how the rest of her music sounds, though.

I think it's a great decade, and right before and after the decade started was the best IMO (most of my albums are from 98-02).

imo it seems like the music industry as a whole gets worse as each decade passes by... you could really go back 6 decades and it would go like this (quality of music per decade as a whole) 50's>60's>70's>80's>90's>00's. if we have poo bands like nickelback, blue october, seether, puddle of mud, etc. (and this is just alternative music) in the 00's i'm terrified of the crap i'm going to hear on the radio in the 10's.. your thoughts?

My thoughts are that you have to go back in time and look at the really bad stuff. You can't just look at bands like Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles and think that's how the past always was... It's not like in 20 years people are going to be listening to Soulja Boy.

I think it's been awful. While there have been a few catchy songs that have caught my attention, I haven't found any modern bands/artists that I actually like. And most of the mainstream music out there is the same "rap" song that in actuality is some guy talking into a voice box to an awfully poppy beat or a band with a bunch of emo guys who wear all black and put on more eyeliner than any girl I know singing about how bad their life sucks.

Mainstream always sucks, you need to look underground... Modern music is just as good as any other time period, it's just harder to find.

imo it seems like the music industry as a whole gets worse as each decade passes by... you could really go back 6 decades and it would go like this (quality of music per decade as a whole) 50's>60's>70's>80's>90's>00's. if we have poo bands like nickelback, blue october, seether, puddle of mud, etc.

It's not like in 20 years people are going to be listening to Soulja Boy.

like i said in my earlier post, if you look at the music industry as a whole it seems like it gets worse as each decade passes by. when i say music industry "as a whole" i'm talking about the all the different genres of music in the decade, the good and bad music in the decade, and the quality of the good music and the how crappy the bad music was in the decade...

I think there's more of a variety of music this decade than any other. I'm not really going to say much because everyone has their own tastes and preference.... But I really hate the whole hip-hop/pop genre. I find it really annoying and simple... But either way. There definitely has been some good music this decade. Much to love for anyone of any tastes. It's not difficult to find an artist you like these days, especially with all the technology in helping you find exactly what you want.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]Some catchy songs I enjoy but no band has made me take notice of them in a good way. As far as the last three decades go...80's > 90's > 00's.bminns

That's mostly the fault of record companies banking on easier-to-make music selling, because it does. I don't think it has anything to do really with music being worse, it just has to do with record labels pushing bad artists, because for some reason they sell :(

Terrible. Maybe a ok song here and there, but mostly commercial stuff that is just plain awful. People making music for money not music. I don't listen to anything this decade anymore, all 60 -90's stuff for me. Been downhill since the 80's.
