So i'm watching the pilot for Walking Dead, about 45Minutes into it, very well done so far. However my question is how does a zombie identify each other as living and dead? They seem to disregard other zombies, but can identify living people. Is it because we smell differently? Is it because we don't have the movements down? Is it because we don't moan?

Very curious, help me out...thanks!

It's because our brains are 'fresh'.

Well, since zombies do indeed exist in real life, and are commonly seen in parts with higher amounts of radiation or toxins present in the environment, there are studies being done to determine how they communicate, if they do.

That's what I always assumed. I mean, zombies are supposedly DEAD, and dead people pretty quickly start to smell different than the living.

So are you saying the key to not dying in a zombie invasion is just to have sex every time the zombies are near?

What I've always wondered though...is what is the natural lifespan of a zombie? I mean...take an ideal condition in which a zombie doesn't get shot in the head and has access to lots of human brains. How long will that zombie "live"? Will it live for a few weeks, since it's already dead (and dead things rot)? Or will it live FOREVER since it's already dead (and therefore doesn't have to put up with the aging process that living humans have to go through)?

:D

Sex is the worst thing that people can do during a horrific series of events though, in every slasher / horror movie cliche', any woman her gets her **** out dies, and any man that flops his ding dong out ends up being a coward and dying anyway.

Holy crap! They totally killed that horse! This is by far the best zombie flick I've seen. It's better then the movies I've seen, and what I like about this most is it will build the characters making you be more emotionally envolved. In wonder if they'll eventually explain how the invasion started.

Varies from story to story.

In reality, they'd barely last a couple of days, as they're going to run out of energy/water to continue functioning incredibly quickly.

But...wouldn't they theoretically get that water and energy replenished by eating human brains?

That's why I'm assuming the absolute ideal condition of a zombie being kept in a zoo, and continually fed a steady supply of human brains until the zombie dies. I'm not talking about starvation or lack of water or nutrients. I want to remove that from the equation. To assume that the zombie is being provided EVERYTHING it needs to have a long and healthy life, and then seeing how long it "lives" given the best circumstances possible.

I always wondered that, myself. You would think that with them being dead, they are still slowly decomposing. Maybe they would eventually reach a point that they've become so rotted away they would no longer be able to move?

Good point, there was that one half zombie in the park from the first episode. Very weak, it was, and was in way worse shape then any other zombie.

On the average case it's due to smell. Or in Shaun of the Dead's case, just the demeanor.

Some zombies rot into piles of flesh or die of starvation and what have you after a little while (28 Weeks Later, for instance). Otherwise it's just one of those details writers drop out to prolong the story, and they pretty much "live" forever.

I would say that smell, look and other things would play a factor in it.. And to the other discussion here of how long they'd live, i'd expect until they're disposed of as dying and rotting hasn't stopped them coming back to life.. Just my opinions on the matter, i love zombie talk
