I'm seeing a lot of people in the comments section in the report about the PSN hackers being apprehended going on about life sentences and even the death penalty. To me this seems a bit ridiculous, if they didn't actually use or sell the data they stole I think 3-5 years is sufficient but if they did use or sell the data then maybe 7-10 years is more appropriate. It's not like anybody got killed or even hurt.

What sentence do you think they deserve?

Well, I think sony should be sued... no firewall/protection whatsoever...? But then again, they did something illegal and ruined online gaming for gamers for a while, so yeah... give em 3-5 years I say!

If that's true, I'd imagine someone will sue them for negligence provided they can get enough evidence to make a compelling case. Sony has pretty big pockets.

Well whatever the length you serve for identity theft and then 77 million cases of that should do it.

They should be hired by Sony to act as security consultants. They broke into the system, so they are the best people to defend it.

Hell, they could hire them out to videogame developers to make hacking mini-games in their games that actually make some amount of sense.

That sounds like it would chafe. :|

I guess they could still play games or hack, but it'd be much slower.

Death Penalty? That's ridiculous.

I would say 10 years in prison at the most.

3 years seems fair but only for the actual hacking not the DDOS. As long as they weren't using a botnet or other method to use other people's computers (ie ping of death) then this should not be punished as DDOSs can be brought about simply by a service being popular or poor server configuration, there are systems that can protect against this and if the admins didn't use them it's their fault. Also i don't think anyone should be giving an uneducated opinion on this, most of the extreme comments i've seen are from people who don't fully understand what they did.

This wasn't cyber terrorism. Cyber terrorism has to lead to real world results, for instance attacking a power grid or water system.

I doubt Anonymous even did it. A few weeks ago it was confirmed that the hackers had used Amazon's cloud to DDOS Sony when the attack took place...Yet now they're saying it was done off one of the hacker's home servers? Sony needs to grow up and learn that it has to protect it's user's sensitive information, rather, they're just blaming a group that protested them in the past.

Eh? A home server wouldn't be able to DDOS Sony. Also Anon said they only committed the initial DDOS, all other attacks were committed by Lulzsec.

If they have solid evidence to what they did.. They could easily get 10 years or more.. What they did literally cost a company 10's of millions of dollars and exposed numerous private information of people.. Their conviction though is not going to some how end hacking though.. In the end this entire incident is at the feet of Sony for having a lacking security system.

The 3 hackers that were arrested, the news reported that both Sony and the Spanish police (who made the arrest) claim that there was a server there that was used in the attack on sony. It doesn't make sense that even after using Amazon's cloud to conduct the DDOS, that this other server would be involved. Regardless, Anon has since released a warning to Sony.

i say 10-15 years, from what i've heard they stole the identitys of millions of people and their bank account details,

Who cares if they were going after sony they shouldnt have hurt the everyday man that works hard, has a real job and earns his money so he can spend it on things he enjoys, for some1 to take that from the everyday working class man/woman i say thats a terrible crime.

I'm sure many mass murderers had good intentions too. Unfortunately they hurt alot of people so that defense doesn't work for the murderer.

Similar to this. Their intentions were good (not really) but they harmed thousands of thousands of innocent people so it doesn't matter if they had pure intentions. They hurt others.

No, really. They only did it to prove a point to Sony. Or so I was told, care to enlighten me?Doct0rBiohazard

what was that point exactly? because sony was trying to get geohotz prosecuted for doing something that is..... oh yeah..... illegal. an interesting fact is that microsoft has been doing this stuff for years. I knew a guy who hacked Xboxes and Xbox360s and sold them in flea markets. he almost got sent to prison for that. so, in reality, companies have never tolerated people hacking their systems and pirating their games. and they really shouldnt be expected to.

but about their good intentions, im sure they decided to hack into people's personal information (like credit/debit cards numbers, social secutirty numbers), all in good faith. all for the greater good right?............ good intentions my ***

I honestly dont care what their intentions are. they committed an act of terrorism. and im not just using that word lightly. they attempted to use threats of a attack to get sony to change something, and then when sony didnt bend to their demands, they attacked them. this is terrorism, by its definition. and what did they accomplish? keeping gamers from being able to play their PS3s online for almost a month, and almost stealing countless people's information.

sorry, but they are not matyrs, they are not good guys, they are not freedom fighters, they are not noble. they are terrorists. they are criminals. and their self-righteousness only makes them even bigger scumbags.
