What music player do you have? It should say at the bottom somewhere.
I use Itunes and it says how many songs I have but not how many artists I have.
Look up in the right corner. To the left of the search bar, there should be three icons that say "view" underneath them. Click on the second icon. Then in the middle tabs, switch from "albums" to "artists".

you could just look at the actual folder using windows explorer (probably in your 'my music' folder or possibly 'i tunes music' folder. There should be a list of all the artist folders, just highlight all of them and see how many items you have highlighted (it will say this at the bottom of the window).
God damn! I just spent about an hour and a half creating a fantastic post about the 5 different artists I have in my music library, complete with links to sample tracks and a paragraph of why I like them. Only to accidentally press the side mouse button on my Logitect which makes me go back a page, then lose all my work!
