[QUOTE="MrGeezer"][QUOTE="t3hrubikscube"]potentially we are 100% in control of our own lives.t3hrubikscube
That's only the case if we were all capable of exploring EVERY path in life.
To take an extreme example, I know a mentally retarded dude. Sure he's "in control of his own life" in the sense that he decides what to eat for breakfast (and even this isn't absolute, as he sure as hell can't afford to eat lobster), but he's retarded. He was always retarded, he's retarded now, and he'll be retarded on the day that he dies. Any job or life path which would require him to NOT be retarded is and always has been closed to him. He never had control over that aspect of his life, and he never will.
Again, an extreme example. But for everyone, certain paths are closed or opened for us before we are even born. We do NOT have unlimited potential. We START with certain things being decided for us, and then our lives continue to be molded by external forces until the day we die.
Of course. I'm just saying that within our realm of potential, we are 100% in control. We're all born into different lifestyles, locations, etc. Some of us are born with diseases or disorders. Some of us are born into poor families while others are born into rich families. I could go on but I know you get the point. My point is that within our limits, within our realm, within our norms, we are all in control of our daily activities, the way we go about things, etc. We all go about things differently, of course, due to our different personalities, beginnings, and so forth, but I believe that we're all in control of what we do. Well, within your realm of potential is a pretty big caveat. Having the choice of eating cheerios vs eating fruit loops for breakfast does not make someone feel in control. Having the ability to choose your quality of life and ultimately choose a satisfying life are more what I am talking about.
