Just wondering how much does everyone study for Uni? like on a weekly basis excluding exam.

I am asking because I have just started this semester and I am not coping too well, I don't know when enough is enough study etc, like this last week I spent probbaly 10 hours on saturday then 10 hours on sunday doing a history essay, on monday I done 7 hours doing some grammar task and a maths report, tuesday I continued the maths report, today I had uni classes for 4 hours done 2 hours of study in between got home done a reading. Anyways I honestly think I have ocd, I just hate studying so much but I'm pushing it so much, like I am worrying about failing and all that but I just wish I could procrastinate I know its wierd but it's insanity studying constantly and working 16 hours a week having like no free time. The free time I do have however I think about 'should I be studying'.... how does everyone else do it?

It is a bit early, and traffic here seems to decrease when holidays end. Anyway...I study incessantly, but I haven't called it studying for years. That's just...life at a university. I don't really count hours. I started reading for the term in early August; reading ahead for a month before the term starts is a good habit to develop. Maybe you should think about quitting your job.

seems like you're pushing yourself a bit too hard. you can't be working every second of every day. you NEED time for yourself.

I did not spend that much time. I would study the day before an exam and spent the min amount of time that was necessary to get an 'A' on assignments -that equated to very little time studying and even less on assignments for psychology (a couple hours a week tops) -almost no time studying but a good amount of time on projects for education (about 5 hours a week) -a moderate amount of time studying and doing homework for accounting (about 7 hours a week)

HerrJosefK

Why :?

College is about more than what you learn in cla$$...developing time management skills for example.
It is also important to remember that college/uni is not for everyone. It was never intended to be that way.

I have never met a person that was in college that could not do well while working and going to school
-now that might mean no time for parties, drinking, video games, GS, etc

Not nearly as much as I should have done. A lot of my assignments were last minute jobs.

Including the time I spend in class, I usually dedicate about 35 hours a week to college. That include both in class and out of class work.

There are some insane study times being listed here... IMO, some people need to learn how to study smarter, not harder. (just speaking in general since I do not know anyone here)

The issue here is, I only have 8 contact hours per week at uni.

1 of my Units is primary school maths as I'm doing primary teaching and requires sort of no effort.

1 of my units is teaching my how to write essays with no final exam.

And Im doing 2 history units.

I do however hope the guys that are studying 40 hours pw get hd's for every unit?

But how do I know when I've studied enough?

Say if I tested myself to make notes on every aspect of each topic I've done in the last 5 lectures and I got most of the stuff covered does that mean Im set ? I've always been told history is a mix of facts and your opinion but who knows.

I don't think you need to study 35-40 hours necessarily if your main goal is simply to pass. However if your goal is all A's, and you want to get the most information possible out of the class then 35 hours (including time in class while taking 16hrs of classes) is pretty normal. It does make a difference. Because I'm in a seminary they watch our study habits and make sure we are studying sufficient amounts per week. The seminary's average GPA is 2-3 points higher than the rest of the students on campus who aren't seminarians. So your studying time is simply based off your goal, if you just want to pass then you could probably get away with only a few out of class hours per week.

I don't buy that at all (study time needed to get all A's) -once again, it is all about learning how to study That is an extreme amount of time to devote to studying. College is about more than what happens in the cla$$room and study time.

Very little, but considering I'm starting college soon, I'm really gonna have to change my studying habits. Especially since I have to work around my classes.

Would have to say a fair amount of studying; about three hours a day. They usually entail me reading the chapter and taking hand written notes to help me study for the exam. When the exam date arrives, usually just spend an hour or two reading the information to refresh myself. Most of the time, I'm working on essays and other assignments which take the majority of my time; group projects, case studies, essays, and field work(education major so I go out in the field and teach for an hour).

As stated before, it's really about time management. Never do an assignment last minute or everything will seem to pile on top of one another creating a lot of unnecessary pressure. It'd be wise to do things as soon as possible... even weeks ahead of their due date if you have the time. That way, you have a firm grasp on your goals and be able to take the time to invest the necessary work. Even for myself, working some twenty to twenty-five hours a week and with eighteen credit hours, I need to be able to plan my assignments and act accordingly.

Your college must be extremely different than the college I go to then. Jack Squat doesn't happen in class .A few powerpoints and lecture then the professors assign a few chapters to read along with some assignments and thing to study for the quiz next class. I'm a pretty good studier I only have to look at things once to under stand them but even that takes at least a few hours a day. The point of college is to do most your learning outside of class. The professor is there only to facilitate this learning.

I study on weeks of exams/finals. Its definitely up there in the 20+ hour range. I screw up my sleep pattern pulling off all nighters studying in those weeks.

Maybe just a difference in how we learn.
I barely did any 'studying' outside of cal$$ (not counting projects/homework)
I went to cla$$ (missed less than 10 cla$$es over 8 years), took good notes, and used those...then used the book to look up anything the professor skimped on

I was able to work full time, go to school full time, party, and get grades.

School is a big game. You just have to learn how to play it. The professor is going to talk about what is most important to them...the same **** will be on the test.
Occasionally you get something out of left field, but those times are rare.

You could say I got off easy with a psychology degree, but not the others. It is all about learning how to play the game.

different for each person really. some people need to study a lot to learn the material, others can put in less time.. i guess once you start getting a feel for how you are doing in the classes you can determine how much work you need to put in

Well I'm a double major one of those being philosophy and professors rarely give us the answers to the quizes before hand, it's completely up to us to study outside of c1ass and be prepared for the answers. Our study guide for one of my philosophy exams had 210 topics on it. I studied for hours and only got a B. It may also have something to do with the major you have as well.

Agreed. I'm an engineering major, and nowhere near that amount of time is required to get straight "A"s for an 17-18 credit semester.

Probably.

Never took a philosophy course.
But my strategy worked for mathematics, education, accounting, and psychology.

LOTS of reading time from what I gathered, to get an "A." I only took one course. Did the bare minimum and got a "B."

I agree. Maybe it's because I'm able to retain what I'm reading without having to read it 80 times, but still, college is so much more than learning from the books. :P

I don't study enough, to be honest. I tend to study only before quizzes, tests, exams, etc. I'm working on studying more regularly, though. It really depends on your own abilities, your particular classes/professors, and your specific major.
