Just try to have fun with it. I took an argument class last quarter where we had to do debates and mock trials. Nobody is going to care about what you say anyway and it will be forgotten by the end of class. If it helps, have a speech typed up to present. I always like to be spontaneous and come up with things on the spot but if you're nervous you run the risk of blanking out.
I'm a music major and I have to do performances in my classes almost every week and I found the more I did it the easier it got. The same applies to public speaking. Practice doing it in front of family and friends.
I get very, very nervous when I have to do something in front of the class. I actually just had to read a part in Othello out-loud to the class. It really didn't help that not only was it written in what ever the hell Shakespeare writes in but my teacher liked to yell at me when I messed up a line. :?
It's ironic because I've been told I'm a great speaker in general conversations.

 Awesome, isn't it? Have you seen the entire SNL performance? It's hilarious.
I don't get very nervous before speaking, but when I get up there, I have to keep myself from losing it. I stammer and go off-track often.Theokhoth
Yeah, that pretty much sums me up as well.
If i am prepared and well rehearsed then i am not nervous at all but if i don't really know what i am going to say then i am bad and nervous.
What helped me in speech class, and what could help you, is i just think "Well, by tomorow, nobody is even going to remember my speech and within a week nobody is ever going to think about it again except me." Basically i believe there is nothing the audience is going to do to you that could affect you for a long time..unless you make it. The audience isn't about to get up and attack you if you mess up or miss a word, they aren't going to remember your slip ups or you or your speech...i just think "well, there is nothing i should really be afraid of", then i feel better knowing that life will go on no matter how the speech goes.
Well, I ace'd the last presentation I got so I'm pretty decent, I just can't make up things on the spot well when public speaking (ie. I need to be somewhat prepared)kayn83Right, I really can't think of a situation where I'd speak publicly without a "rough draft" in my head.
For me, it depends on the audience. I know there are some people who just pre-judge you the moment you walk through the door and I would certainly not feel confident then. However, when you make some good friends, get on with people around you, I expect you could easily speak how you would expect to.Thorpe89Personally, I think it is easier in front of a bunch of people you hardly know. If you mess up in front of friends or people you genreally know well, you have to interact with those people a lot of the time.
