I'm in college and I still haven't moved out. I do live in dorms during the school year, but IMO you haven't moved out until you have your own permanent residence.
I actually would love a place of my own, I'll be 21 in September and still living at home. But with city college by my house and not having a decent job I'm kind of stuck here.
What if you have a bunch of temporary residences before you have your permanent? I'd say you're moved out when you aren't depending on your parents for any sort of shelter, that's how I see it.I'm in college and I still haven't moved out. Then you aren't actually moved out. Once you buy a house or apartment and only go home to visit your folks, not to crash, then you're moved out. Until then you're just living away from home for most of the year.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant. Basically what I meant by permanent residence is that you aren't going back to live with your folks on a regular basis (eg: a college student who comes back to live at home every summer before moving back into a dorm).

Me too. Ever since I've been 18yrs old, I've paid (or earned through scholarships) for the roof over my head.
Of course, there were a couple summers I came home for the summer break, but I was still paying for my apt back at FSU. There were a couple summers I had internships where the company I interned for paid for my apartment.
That sounds like a pretty sweet deal. There were a couple summers I had internships where the company I interned for paid for my apartment.

Random question but I'm curious. I'm moving out to go to school in two months. How old were you when you moved out of your parent's house? For those of you not moved out, do you think that you will ever move out?Never let your guard down... that is when I get you 8)jackkenzy

i havent lived with my "folks" since i was 16, and no one pays my rent but me.
Thats always a good setup, being in school yet still at home.Twenty-two, although just barely (my birthday was a week after I moved out). I lived with mymom when I went to university. We get along really well, so I didn't see what the rush was to move out when the university was within walking distance.

Yeah, those 2internships were with the same company, but different depts in different cities. Awesome summers. It was a group of 8 of us (5 guys, 3 gals) each time staying in duplexes. We'd all work on the same project during the day and go out at night.....well most of us did.
I highly recommend everyone in college to do at least one internship.
20, then right back in a year later. A ****ty roomate situation+me quitting my job prematurely+not being able to find transportation from the area I was living in to the closest community college all ended up with me moving back in with my parents. Money's been tight ever since and I don't see myself being able to afford an apartment on my own for a while.

So let me get this straight then: You have your own place, yet for some reason decided to live so far away from you university that you have to move out every year to attend and thus have to pay for two living spaces at the same time?

the place i live in when im at uni has rent contracts for september to july, its always been that way, and i spend one month of the year with someone that isnt my parents.

I'd say you're moved out when you aren't depending on your parents for any sort of shelter, that's how I see it. I agree with this. I also agree with that, adding that if you live in a place where your parents fund your expenses. Thats not really moved out either. Had a girl once tell me she moved cross country on her own and supported herself. We were both working at the same crappy job so i know she wasnt keeping her place and the stuff she bragged about having. Turned out they paid all her bills, she just paid rent. So no, that didnt count. Neither does moving in with someone else's family, imo. I planned to move out at 21-22, I had just turned 21 couple of months before i graduated college, but i actually moved out at 27. I think it depends on what section of the country you live in as well. Im in the NJ/NY area so its more expensive to live on your own. You wont see too many people in this area saying they moved out before they were 21-22, some exceptions of course.I'm in college and I still haven't moved out. I do live in dorms during the school year, but IMO you haven't moved out until you have your own permanent residence.
