How to politely ask someone how you met them?

So this girls is talking to me on fb, apparently has been on my friends list for a while. Now, I'm really bad at remembering people, and can't remember who she is. What's a polite way to figure this out?

I don't even add people to my friends list on facebook unless they can tell me how I know them; in fact when I get a friend request from a half-naked pornstar-looking female, I send them a "How do I know you?" message, and if they can't answer it, I don't add them; they're more than likely some dude looking to acquire my personal info.RBerry82

Politely?

Just apologize first, like, "I'm sorry but I'm having a hard time remember when I first met you." Then give them a couple of generic scenarios, like, "Was it at a BLANKS party last BLANK? Or do you know BLANK?"

It's gonna be a little awkward depending on how you guys have been talking, but better now then when you guys are sexting ...

Check for mutual friends and try asking them. If that fails, just say you are very drunk and would like to know who the hell she is.

It seems to me that you never talked much to her and didn't at all for the last months. I think it's normal to forget some people if they are not really good friends. I had similar situations and I never were punched for a "Sorry, could you give me a hint who you are? I'm not sure right now."
