So, this topic is for all you authors or prospective authors out there. I recently self published my book entitled Epidemic Victus Cadaver using the website Lulu.com: http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/epidemic-victus-cadaver-a-journal/6198217 and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to market it? What should I do to get my book out there and into the actual high end retail bookstores. The Lulu website itself will eventually put the book up on Amazon.com and that will make it available there, but I just don't want it to fade away into obscurity.

So, any thoughts or past experiences or advice would be very helpful.

Thanks

Yeah, I thought about the local book store. But where I live we have one high end retailer (Chapters) and several used book stores.

Also, would advertising for a book in a newspaper or in craigslist really be that effective?

I highly agree with the newspaper however you should give away some copies for the sake of reviews since you aren't publishing with a well known publisher.

The most obvious way is to get yourself an agent.

i think newspapers would be very expensive and not worth it for you. i think you would have better luck with craigslist. you should also talk to the owners of the used book stores to see if they would like to carry it. i would try the high end retailer after you are in a couple of smaller stores.

Thats really only if he is interested in getting a publisher involved; not sure if he does since he self-published

Yeah, I thought about getting an agent, and at the moment I'm a University student and do not have much of an income to the point of being able to afford one.

As for the newspaper ad I'm slightly surprised, I just never thought that an ad in a newspaper would be all that effective. Usually I picture like, businesses and interactive media to take on those advertisements, not a book.

Get an agent or, if you can't afford one, give a copy to big time reviewers, and me. Because I'd really like to read this.

Surely he'll want to sell as many copies as possible though, an agency is the best route for that.

If you do want an agent, any legitimate one will not charge you any reading fees or other fees other than what is derived from the sale of your work. If there is upfront expense with an agent, they are probably scammers.

What kind of big time Reviewers are we talking about? Like, literary reviewers that work for magazines?

Also, although the agency idea would be very nice, I just can't afford to hire one due to my financial position.

With self-publishing, it's going to be A LOT harder to sell your books in high end retail bookstores. They don't want self-published or POD books. You have to try really hard if you want to become well known. It's extremely rare for a self-published author to become well known. Your best bet would have getting a literary agent. Most major publishers want literary agents and won't accept unsolicited submissions. And believe me, when I say it'll be a lot harder to sell your book as a self-published author, it'll be a lot harder.

Again, a legitimate agency will not charge you anything at all up front and make their money entirely on residuals. On the other hand, they will only take you on as a client if they believe that they will be able to get a publisher interested enough in your work to make it profitable for them.

That's the wrong idea when it comes to literary agents. They don't ask for fees. Those who ask for upfront fees are usually scammers. Literary agents will not cost you anything. You query them first and go from there.

Well, New York Times is a good one. Maybe some magazines, but you here about New York Times most often. If you can find a good agent that doesn't charge an upfront fee and is willing to help, they'll give it to necessary reviewers.

Don't take it off the site until you find an agent, that way it'll sell some before you get someone to mass publish it.

You already self-published it. Your best bet would have looked for a literary agent. Doesn't mean you can't still try to find a literary agent. Here are some websites that will help: P&E is a great place to fish out scammers. You can also fish out scammers when it comes to publishers.Agent Query is another great place to find literary agents that represent your course of work. Do not query (or send a proposal since it is a nonfiction) that does not represent your book. You'll just waste your time and their doing so. :)

No they won't. Literary agents only work to help you get published. They don't ever charge an upfront fee. If they do, they most likely scammers and a red flag to STAY AWAY. And New York Times, I think it's really hard to get them to review a self-published book. However, I would do research on that to make sure.

Not if he doesn't do anything to get it to sell. They won't just sell on their own. He needs to put a lot leg work into selling a self-published book.

Sounds like a plan to me. You might sell one or two copies while on the hunt for an agent.

Personally, I don't know if I would keep it up on the website. It might make it harder to find a literary agent, I don't know. It's a very long process to begin with, however. It may take months to find a literary agent who will represent your book.

Do a lot of research before querying (or proposing). Do your homework.

I thought this was a nonfiction book. I'm sorry. I only glanced at the title of it. I'm really tired at the moment. Disregard anything I said about a nonfiction book. Since it is a work of fiction, you will want to query, not send a proposal. However, do do your research. It'll help you in the long run and save any headaches you might have in the future.

Edit: And DO NOT say fictional novel. DO NOT! It's redundant and a literary agent will most likely reject your query and you will receive a rejection form.

Advertise it and create big hype for it.
