When I applied, I got rejected from my top school (Cornell), but accepted to my first choice (Syracuse)...

Just make sure you apply to more than just 1 or 2 schools, and pick ones that you can see yourself going to. If you get rejected from the one school you actually want to go to, and you only applied there... you have only yourself to blame.

I want to go to either Notre Dame or Wash U in St Louis. Both are incredibly competitive and I wouldn't be surprised at all if I was rejected at both...

I do know that I'm a great student, and I will do everything I can to be successful regardless of the college that I attend.

In short, I'd be disappointed, but I won't let it bring down my spirit. I'm happy with who I am and if I don't get into my top choice so be it. There are plenty of other reputable universities that will gladly take me.

I wouldn't say it's "over rated". But for more people than many would believe it is unnecessary. We do have a cultural belief that "not going to college = loser failure evil" which crosses into social beligerance. Even though their are plenty of people in the world who never set foot in so much as a community college and are happy and well off financially. That being said, the quality of a college education over other forms of education is absolute. And if you REALLY want to learn something complex and scientific, their is no better place to go.

I'm a senior this year and I got rejected from my top 2 choices, UCLA and UCSD, so now I'm going to UCI. I got so depressed for a few days especially after seeing so many of my friends getting into those schools. Eventually I just got over it and told myself that UCI is still a good school and I'll have just as good of a time there. It's not the end of the world if you don't get into the school you want. You'll move on soon enough.

The only reason to go is if you haven't gotten laid by time you turn 18...in which case you go there since everyone has sex at least once in college.

I have no plans on going to college, and I have other means of getting laid:lol:

If I really want to learn something complex, I could study it myself. Almost every book you get on a college campus can be bought outside of the school. You can study at your own pace, on your own time, and not have to pay $30,000 a year to sit in some boring class. Real wisdom comes from experience anyway, not just repeating what you've learned.

Exactly. College is just for sex and drugs. A place to keep the youngsters all together so they're not out on the streets causing trouble. It's a waste of time and money. All anyone needs to be succesful, is believe in themselves, develop their natural talents and make something out of that. Be creative. Create something and sell it. Explore an idea you may have and take it to the next level. Look how many people get rich just by starting a website? Who needs an education for that? If you have an idea, and enough people like it, you're bound to become very wealthy very quickly in this day and age. And you didn't have to go through the system and swallow their brainwash...

You just need to be driven and have a goal in mind...a piece of paper from a college that says "YAY! YOU MADE IT!", really doesn't hold much weight in my opinion.

P.S. - I've been to college, so I know what I'm talking about. I'm mad that I wasted that money and time. Still paying off the damn student loan...grrr....

Job interview? Who needs that if you're the boss? I'm talking about taking care of yourself and starting your own business. Screw the system. I'm not gonna rely on some brainwashed nitwit with half the IQ of me, tell me if I'm qualified or not for a certain position, which in the end wouldn't even come down to qualifications. They'll just judge you based on appearance or something similarly shallow...

Strange question for me as a graduate. I guess i would feel good knowing that i dodged a bullet, but i wouldn't have known. As far as money goes you really don't need an education. If you want a secure job then i'd suggest learning a trade. Also the marketing field requires no experience. College is just a test to see if you can put up with society. It's all just professional jargon to keep people intellectually obedient.

Yes, you can buy any college book and read about it off campus. Just like I can run onto google and read about quantam physics and know that works. But guess what, I don't actually know any of it. And would look like a fool if I tried to debate someone who did. Do you know why? Because college tests you to see that you understood the matieral you read. Any idiot can read a textbook, what matters is whether or not you got the message it was trying to send.

You can study at your own pace, on your own time, and not have to pay $30,000 a year to sit in some boring class. Real wisdom comes from experience anyway, not just repeating what you've learned.

Real experience comes from on the job practice, but how, pray tell, do you intend to get to that job if you don't know anything about it? Few employers are willing to hire anyone without the credentials and proof to show that he was tested and has a concept of the ideas being applied. You can hem and haw this point all you want, but no one trusts a self taught doctor more than a doctor with a degree on his wall.

If you'd like, you could read the posts I made above yours to see what I'm talking about. Of course if you want to be a doctor, you'd need the specific training to do so, and I myself wouldn't trust a "doctor" without a degree. That's different, and I wasn't even talking about the medical field, it was just whether or not college is necessary in the first place. And a doctor doesn't need to pass a job interview. My father is a doctor. After graduation, he got a license, rented an office and set up shop. He'll also be the first person to tell you that college is not necessary for success. I stand by my original statement: College is overrated and unnecessary.

EDIT: I'm referring to the adopted ideology in this country that people NEED to go to college after high school in order to make something of their lives. I just wanted to point out how far from the truth that actually is. If you feel like college will help you, then go for it. But it's 100 times better to be self-made.

 I suppose you intend to support this claim correct?

A place to keep the youngsters all together so they're not out on the streets causing trouble. It's a waste of time and money.

I am going to ask you AGAIN to support your points with evidence.

All anyone needs to be succesful, is believe in themselves, develop their natural talents and make something out of that. Be creative. Create something and sell it.

The arts students are always the ones who say this. Usually their course work is about as difficult as learning to spell your name.

Explore an idea you may have and take it to the next level. Look how many people get rich just by starting a website?

Look at how many people didn't. You'd make a great infomercial.

Who needs an education for that? If you have an idea, and enough people like it, you're bound to become very wealthy very quickly in this day and age. And you didn't have to go through the system and swallow their brainwash...

Again, because your "creativity" worked out for you, you just assume it will work for everyone else. You're full of yourself.

You just need to be driven and have a goal in mind...a piece of paper from a college that says "YAY! YOU MADE IT!", really doesn't hold much weight in my opinion.

Thankfully nobody with an actual education cares about your opinion.

P.S. - I've been to college, so I know what I'm talking about. I'm mad that I wasted that money and time. Still paying off the damn student loan...grrr....

Wait, so you went to college, flunked out, and now hate it? That's hilarious! "I failed college, so clearly you should listen to me about it instead of someone who went to it and passed." Man, i'm saving this thread.

It's not too bad really. As long as you have options. I applied to 10 schools. So even though Yale, Princeton and Columbia didn't accept me, I still had GA Tech, Emory, and Duke.

I would feel pretty disappointed. I plan on going to a collage and hour and a half away for my first two years to get the mandatory stuff out of the way, then a specialised collage for my career job. I hope. My grades are pretty good, so...

Its sort of a dreadfull and scary thing to think about it, tbh.

Yet you directly contradict this statement repeatedly with your meandering. Clarify, do you feel college is useless for people going into arts? Or for sciences both theoretical and applied?

That's different, and I wasn't even talking about the medical field, it was just whether or not college is necessary in the first place. And a doctor doesn't need to pass a job interview. My father is a doctor. After graduation, he got a license, rented an office and set up shop. He'll also be the first person to tell you that college is not necessary for success.

Any college graduate will tell you college is not necessary for success. They didn't say that you shouldn't bother with it. That's just a strawman of what they said. A misinterpritation.

I stand by my original statement: College is overrated and unnecessary.

And I stand by my original question, for who? You claim you don't mean this but then backpeddle your stance. What are you trying to say? You say right here that college is worthless. But you seem to imply previously that it isn't that way for everyone. So who then? If you mean arts sure, college is a waste of time because a college is best used for learnings skills that can be practically applied in a scientific and professional set.

Wow, CaptHawkeye, speaking of misinterperetations, you've done a swell job of that in regards to everything I've said. Why do I have to spell it out for you? I've yet to backpeddle, you just blurred the lines and misconstrued what I stated. College is not necessary. Period. In the overall sense which is what I was originally referring to. However, if you want to get into a specific category, such as medicine, then yes, I would agree a degree would be absolutely necessary - more for the fact that people feel like they can trust a doctor with a degree. Not just cause it looks good that they went to school.

Are you done trying to discredit me yet? It's not working, and honestly, your ego is quite disturbing. Take it down a notch please.

I went to community college and transferred there after I went through college. Granted though, I was a year behind compared to my other peers who just went to the university directly without transferring.

Yeah, I mean, your whole blatently anti-educate stance doesn't make anyone think that you were implying you failed. Nope.

I have a degree in Audio Engineering. I'm a certifed Pro-Tools engineer as well. (You can look up what that is if you'd like.)

Not relevant, if it didn't work out for you that's too bad.

Again, I'm speaking from experience.

So am I.

Get off your high horse already. You look stupid now that you've assumed that I was a failure.

Oh jesus, you nitpick me once and yet fail to answer any of the questions I made or provide supporting evidence for any of your own. I only wish I knew more people as self-absorbed as you are. Comedy at its best.

I'm still paying off the student loan because it was a lot of money...not cause I didn't grraduate. Where in the world did you get that idea?

Everyone pays off student loans or didn't you notice? Quit acting as if you're some special case.

Why would anyone trust you, a person who jumps to such illogical conclusions? Hmmm?

How are my conclusions illogical? You are the one claiming college isn't useful for people. Jesus, do you read your own stuff? This is hilarious! I knew plenty of people like you at my college. "This place sucks because I failed, you so totally don't need it." I even know a few of them who are just fine, but many more of them are not, and continue to hold the college responcible for their own irresponcibility. And they try to make people believe their crap too!

Obviously, I'd be upset.

When applying, you need to apply to multiple colleges, in case the top one doesn't accept you. Thankfully, my first choice did accept me.

West Point, Class of 2012!

Wow, CaptHawkeye, speaking of misinterperetations, you've done a swell job of that in regards to everything I've said.Deity_Slapper

Ah, the troll's approach. Unable to support any of his claims or counter any of the arguments made against him, he will just scream and cry in the corner that everyone is misinterpriting him. Even though his own words stand clear in the thread.

Why do I have to spell it out for you? I've yet to backpeddle, you just blurred the lines and misconstrued what I stated. College is not necessary. Period. In the overall sense which is what I was originally referring to.

You backpeddled right here too. But I guess since i'm just "misinterpreting" you right? I mean, you haven't even bothered answering any of my questions. Or providing evidence for your claims. Just saying "college is useless and uneccesary" and expecting people to automatically know what you are REALLY saying.

However, if you want to get into a specific category, such as medicine, then yes, I would agree a degree would be absolutely necessary

Then, *gasp* maybe you shouldn't say things like "college is needless", got it?

- more for the fact that people feel like they can trust a doctor with a degree. Not just cause it looks good that they went to school.

Which again, what you are saying here flies right into the face of your statement that college is needless. Hyperbole some more.

Are you done trying to discredit me yet?

Why bother? You've done a wonderful job yourself.

It's not working, and honestly, your ego is quite disturbing. Take it down a notch please.

Oh no, yet another troll who doesn't like my attitude. Boo hoo. Would you like me to grab you a tissue?

Again, you're saying I failed, when I did not.

I've done a lot of thinking and growing over the years. No need to get into specifics, but I know what I know, and I know I'm right, at least for me.

And what's with all these demands for proof or evidence for what I'm saying? Aren't I allowed to just have an opinion? I can't say anything without some ego-trippin fool coming along and saying, "oh yeah? prove this! prove that!" Shut up already. What is this, a religion thread? Why the hell do I need proof for the OPINION that college is unnecessary? I already said you can have it if you want, I just wanted to show people that it's not the only option, and to not be so narrow-minded.

I'm done with this conversation after this post though, since it seems like you just want to argue, and although it's fun to argue at times, I'm not in the mood right now. So one last time, I'll re-post an earlier edit I made, in case you missed it.

This should sum up my original intent in this thread: I'm referring to the adopted ideology in this country that people NEED to go to college after high school in order to make something of their lives. I just wanted to point out how far from the truth that actually is. If you feel like college will help you, then go for it. But it's 100 times better to be self-made.

^^^That should settle that. And I'll always stand by it, because it's how I feel.. I never said you or anyone else had to agree, so stop acting like it. You are free to disagree as much as you want, but why try to bait me into this pointless arguement? Arguing over opinions will keep us going back and forth all day. I've got other things I want to get into...peace. Peace, that is, if you're into that sort of thing...

You shot yourself in the foot too. I have never seen an argument like this before...

Of course, but guess what? People are also allowed to have an opinion of you, and if that opinion is that you're full of it, then that's too god damn bad isn't it? Maybe you shouldn't stay stupid unsupported crap all of the time.

I can't say anything without some ego-trippin fool coming along and saying, "oh yeah? prove this! prove that!" Shut up already. What is this, a religion thread? Why the hell do I need proof for the OPINION that college is unnecessary?

By this logic, 2 + 2 can equal 5 because that's somone's opinion.

I already said you can have it if you want, I just wanted to show people that it's not the only option, and to not be so narrow-minded.

Yeah, I mean, saying stuff like "College is just for sex and drugs" doesn't give off a totally negative slant on college. Nah, you aren't being narrow minded. I only said things like "college isn't necessary for everyone but for most people it is". Yeah, i'm soooo the narrow minded one.

I'm done with this conversation after this post though, since it seems like you just want to argue, and although it's fun to argue at times, I'm not in the mood right now. So one last time, I'll re-post an earlier edit I made, in case you missed it.

Good, a re-read of what you posted might help you to realize how stupid you look.

This should sum up my original intent in this thread: I'm referring to the adopted ideology in this country that people NEED to go to college after high school in order to make something of their lives.

This is a perfectly reasonable belief. The problem is when you say things like...

"College is overrated and unnecessary."

"If I really want to learn something complex, I could study it myself."

"College is just for sex and drugs. A place to keep the youngsters all together so they're not out on the streets causing trouble. It's a waste of time and money"

...you don't support this reasoning. Understand?

I just wanted to point out how far from the truth that actually is. If you feel like college will help you, then go for it. But it's 100 times better to be self-made.

Or when you say things like that.

^^^That should settle that. And I'll always stand by it, because it's how I feel.. I never said you or anyone else had to agree, so stop acting like it. You are free to disagree as much as you want,

So why are you complaining about it then? Do you think that by taking the moral high ground you can look like a victim? "That evil Hawkeye is just picking on me!"

but why try to bait me into this pointless arguement? Arguing over opinions will keep us going back and forth all day. I've got other things I want to get into...peace. Peace, that is, if you're into that sort of thing...

More passive aggressive bull. I love it when they think no one is going to see through their egotistical "i don't resort to (direct) insults" sharade.

Yeah, ignore the last part more. Also please ignore how I started the thread agreeing that "college isn't necessary for everyone". Did you even read this argument or are you just taking snippets out?

Looks like we have a schizo on our hands, but seriously you know both of your arguments are flawed because they are only relative to your own experience. I didn't read you first post. Sorry but like i have stated before (in other threads shame on you for not knowing) i don't like conducting unnecessary research before posting on gamespot, much like getting a job in life.

Ok, I just ate some delicious pizza, and I'm in the mood to argue now. :)

Of course, but guess what? People are also allowed to have an opinion of you, and if that opinion is that you're full of it, then that's too god damn bad isn't it? Maybe you shouldn't stay stupid unsupported crap all of the time.CaptHawkeye

Stupid unsupported crap? Can you support that? Funny how people like you want proof! proof! proof! all the time, yet you make your own wild claims that also have zero support behind them. But I'll let it slide...because you have a right to have an opinion. Just as long as you know what that is... ;)

By this logic, 2 + 2 can equal 5 because that's somone's opinion.CaptHawkeye

They'd be wrong obviously, but if it's an opinion, what does it matter? I think you just want everyone to think like you.

Yeah, I mean, saying stuff like "College is just for sex and drugs" doesn't give off a totally negative slant on college. Nah, you aren't being narrow minded. I only said things like "college isn't necessary for everyone but for most people it is". Yeah, i'm soooo the narrow minded one.CaptHawkeye

I guess you're narrow-minded...I mean, you're totally not allowing anothers' viewpoint to stick in your mind for longer than a millisecond, whereas I have been to college and now feel like it was a waste of time. Obviously, if I went to college, I must have believed at one point that it was a worthwhile endeavor. I've been on both sides. It would seem I am not as narrow-minded as you try to make me look. You on the other hand, see it only one way.

Good, a re-read of what you posted might help you to realize how stupid you look.CaptHawkeye

I only look stupid to you. Not that I care, since I already know I'm intelligent, and one bitter guy on the internet isn't going to change anything. I'm also quite confident that other members of this forum who may read this, would not see me as stupid. But if it makes you feel better to blatantly bash me (without proof of claimed stupidity, by the way, *wink wink*), then go for it, I guess...

So why are you complaining about it then? Do you think that by taking the moral high ground you can look like a victim? "That evil Hawkeye is just picking on me!"CaptHawkeye

I didn't say you were picking on me. I don't even think you're picking on me. I think you're mad about some decisions you've made in your life, and you're trying to justify them to everyone by attacking anyone who sees differently than you. What else am I to think when you're extremely defensive over this one particular subject? You're defending something...

More passive aggressive bull. I love it when they think no one is going to see through their egotistical "i don't resort to (direct) insults" sharade. CaptHawkeye

Not resorting to direct insults would be a lot better than resorting to direct insults, right? What does it prove to call another person names, other than the fact that you couldn't come up with anything better?

EDIT: By the way, did you notice? I showed you how to properly quote a person multiple times in a single post. Guess you should have went to college for that or something...
