I would ask you to please refrain from the "John Mayer is mainstream so he major SUXORS" comments. I know most of you like underground prog rock and death metal, which i also like, but just as an instrumentalist and song writer, how talented and creative do you think John Mayer is?

10- being with the ranks of hendrix, paige, morello, etc

7- around Mark Tremonti

0- Never picked up a guitar before

He's a fine guitar player, but not an amazing one. Probably a 7.8/10. However, I still find his voice terrible.

That's my opinion, as well. He's not bad, but he's not great, either.

I think he is a hack IMO. He is liek Carlos Santana to me, meaning he plays through a few blues scales and does a few flashy thigns and thinks he is a God. 1/10, he needs to learn to be a better player and not have rolling stone magazine give him false praise. I give him the 1 because he owns guitars.

how can you say he is not technical at all. Here is an excerpt of his wikipedia page

Critically acclaimed, he is said to use the guitar in a unique and imaginative way; rather than just plucking the strings, his maneuvers include toggling between two pickups - one on and one off - while rubbing his hands on the strings over the pickups (his signature vinyl scratch effect used in "Bulls on Parade"). He also uses techniques such as rapidly hitting a pencil on the strings ("Cochise", although he now emulates the sound by "baby-slapping" the strings), scraping an Allen wrench on the strings for a whole song ("People of the Sun") and even tapping the bridge with his audio jack cable ("Testify" and occasionally on "Bullet in the Head").

He is also known for his technical proficiency with the instrument. His early leadwork on Lock Up's "Somethin' **** This Way Comes" shows him exhibiting a wide range of "shred" tactics such as high-velocity alternate-picking sequences and sweep picked arpeggios with finger-tapping.

Jon Mayer is actually an amazing guitarist. My friend used to play with him. Jon is a master of Jazz. I don't care for his music at all, but he is a very good guitarist and deserves that respect.

Everyone hates John Mayer here because he is on the Top 40 radio station. When in reality, they never really listened to any of his music outside of what is played on the radio. I would give him an 8.5 or 9 out of 10. He possibly, POSSIBLY, just as good as Eric Clapton, but more technically sound.

being a musician myself i'd say he's an 8.5-9/10, he's definitely very good at guitar and knows how to play a synthesizer in Ben Folds's "Narcolepsy" pretty well too:-p

Never heard of him, but I went on youtube to check out a solo from one of his songs, and I thought it was good.

So I guess I'll say his a good guitarist.
