Hypnosis illegal?

I was watching "The Mentalist" where they were talking about how it was illegal for the investigator guy to hypnotise the suspect. Is it only illegal for police/etc to attempt to hypnotise persons under question, or is it illegal for anyone to involuntarily attempt to hypnotise someone? Also why? What harm can it do other than persuade them to tell the truth about something. Also to my knowledge you cannot force someone to do something by hypnotising them, only give them different feelings or help them remember stuff.

I've seen hypnosis take place, it's pretty cool. The person being hypnotized has to be 100% willing to do so and has to follow EVERY command of the person hypnotizing them. But yeah, they have to WANT it, so I don't think hypnosis will ever become illegal. Hypnosis is just an extreme state of relaxation.

There is no way you could hypnotize someone without them wanting to be hypnotized.

Pretty much. At least the ones we've seen on TV with their own shows in the past.
