One of my best friends he's very good in chess. He's only 21 and can win against players 3 times his age. He beat me in 2 minutes his chess skills are superb. However, his gpa in college is poor, he has poor memory and his math is terrible. He's in my college by the way. He's middle eastern american. So he doesn't play any sports, he doesn't play video games, his driving and parking skills are below average. When it comes to me....I play handball and basketball but i'm mediocre in both there are so many players better than me. I'm bad at chess, i'm ok in school with a 3.2 gpa. I can't say my driving skills are good cause i never learned stick yet but it's above average. I play the guitar, i can play and memorize a few songs but again...so many people better than me. I can't draw, ok so everyone is good at something and i CAN'T seem to find what i'm good at no matter how hard i try. It's frustrating, Any comments? Also, do you feel this way?

Try getting good at video games. Practice 3 hours a day for a month on Halo 3, invite your friend to play, and smash him, then you can trash talk all you want. :)

Well, if you find yourself lacking some skills, why not practice anything? For example, im about to enter med school, and ive been reading some text books to have a little advantage soon, or find something interesting to do and stick with it, like serious gaming or joining/forming a band.

This problem is actually pretty common, and the internet is to blame, with information about other peoples succeses rolling around pretty much everywhere (this site is no exception), one can only feel a bit low.

Ah I think I'm kind of like you. I do a bunch of things, but I'm pretty average/mediocre at all of them. I'm interested in a bunch of things, but nothing really stands out. I guess all I can say is to keep trying new things and to keep trying to become more skilled in areas that interest you. Hopefully you'll find something.

you're good at being average. the majority of people in the world arent especially talented at anything, or if they are, its useless in the long run.

i mean there has been geniuses who are born with genetics that give them close to 200 IQ. They have an advantage when it comes to say the SAT exam and getting into an ivy league school. I remember there was a european guy with an IQ of 175 who graduated harvard law school at like 17.

Nott all talents are really that great or to be envied for any reason really. For example, some people are amazing at speed cup stacking (look it up). sure they are known within cup stacking circles but do you honestly care if someone can stack 20 cups iin 7 seconds?

yes but the vast majority of people arent really good at anything practical or essential. I mean, all the athletes, genisues, musicians, artsians in the world etc, probably make up less than 1% of the worlds population. think big picture and you'll realize theres nothing wrong with being average.

They are genetics, there is nothing you can do about it.

Genetic intelligence is just like genetic attractiveness, some have it, some dont. Dont let that throw you back, higher intelligence may let you get to an answer faster, but its an answer you can get to.

Btw, IQ is meassured by calculating the average out of subjects like math, logical reasoning, general knowledge etc.

You can still be considered 'bright' yet 'fail' at math for example.

The problem is you're expecting that everybody is supposed to naturally wtfpwn at something. Like you, and many others, we're average..but guess what? I always wanted to make music. I started making music when I was 17, here I am at 20, pretty decent at it and only getting better. It's never too late to get into something. You just gotta invest time like everybody else into one thing, and that one thing is something you'll be good at. Just take your pick.

I would say I fit in well with the Master of None, Jack of No Trades crowd as well. We just have to keep on going and eventually we'll find something. :)

You don't have to be superb at something. There's nothing wrong with being average/normal. Most people on this forum and in the real world are "average" when push comes to shove. It doesn't mean you can't work hard and make something of yourself. Sure you won't become a top industrialist or doctor, but almost nobody does. Don't let it get you down.

Why do you think so many people are factory workers and tradesmen. Not everyone get's a lucky break. Not everyone has some kind of talent.

Chess is a unique game, you can spend decades playing it and never be any good at it. You have toknow every move and every move that could be made to counter or defeat that move. It's probably a game people become good at because they played it since they were like 6 years old. Maybe older maybe younger. They learned to play it at an age in which their brain is still memorizing and storing basic information. From my experience people often forget some of themoves their pieces can make and which piece can take which. I still forget and that's when I screw up.

Many people don't have talent. Like most you'll probably find out the thing you are good atis something you never wanted to nor considered doing. Nobody ever springs up out of their chair exclaiming "I WANT TO DIG DITCHES!" or"I WANT TO INSTALL PLUMBING!"
