Yes, there is (at least in Canada). All the major carriers here offer free text messaging from a computer, to a persons mobile phone. For example, if someone I knew had a cellular phone using Bell, I'd use this site to message them. There are others for Rogers, Fido, etc. Not sure about the USA, but check around their sites.

Write up a message, then place it in a bottle and then throw it into the ocean. I can't guarantee it will get to the right person, what with currents and all.

Or just try your carriers website.

AIM, Skype, Windows Live Messenger... For IM's

For texting usually you can just go to the wireless providers home page and text from there but you have to have a cell registered with that company though I think.

You can use Piegons to carry messages back and forth between you and your allies. One little tip, though: Wild Pigeons are less reliable, and trained carrier Pigeons are more reliable.

He's right. I use window live more than aol. But with either one you can send text messages to phones. Only the person receiving the message will be charged.

That's what I don't want. I don't want to charge my friends money. So basically, there is no free way?

It depends on the plan your friend has. If they have unlimited texting (like most kids do) then obviously no charge. But if not then they'll be charged like any other text message. So even if you did have a cell phone they would still get charged if you send a text. So I don't see the problem you have w/ them being charged since you would be texting w/ a phone if you had one, right?

My friends have verizon and they have unlimited texting. They still told me it would cost them. Not sure though.

As far as I know, texting is texting. I suggest you just try it out. Signing up for IM's is free and just send one message and ask your friend if they were charged. One 10 cent text fee shouldn't kill them.

The only way it would charge them is if the message is categorized as "Data" by the company, and that would then depend on their Data plan but I don't know of a company that does that.
It's just a normal text message.
