people these days can just throw whatever crap together and call it modern art. and then for art class, we have to go through and try and find the sculptors/authors intentions, and feelings, and symbolisms. if they just threw it together randomly, how can it have any symbolism or anything.

examples:

and
what the crap?
these aren't very good examples, but still do you get my point? its just random junk, not art.

Paintings, meaningful sculptures, or something similar. Thats what I class as art. Not a shed built from the wood of a ship, or a sheep frozen in some liquid stuff.

I like some modern art, but most of it I find, well, completely asinine.

Honest to fuzzy pink unicorn, in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, there is a canvas painted purple with a black line painted down the middle of it, that's it, and it's hanging in a museum.

Heh, went I went to Madrid, in one of the museums, there was a painting in which the top 3/4s of it was purple, and the bottom 1/4 was green.

I don't know if Salvador Dali paintings are modern art.. but if they are then I guess I like modern art.

I could vomit and put ear wax, cause yellow's a pretty color, on a piece of paper and call it art. Anybody can do it and make up some lame meaning behind it. Like "oh yah the ear wax represents the struggle"...modern art sucks

Modern art seems to be a whole bunch of stuff that isnt really that impressive. Old paintings of stuff, theyre impressive because of their detail. An un-made bed, or piece of writing on white paper? No.

modern art is any art produced from the late 1800's until postmodernism in the 1970's. this thread is making an absurd generalization.

wow, i knew this would happen eventually. i don't know speicaically what it's called(whatever genre it is of art thats just random and stupid and takes no skill), modern art was my best way of describing it because these days you can put anything together and call it modern art.

behold bastard son
I am the evil one
no glory to be reached
no more thy slavery
the passion I besieged
spawn terror
smash thy will
ye pale dominion fades away my
will dominates

and watch my star arise
burning up the earth
sun - the eye of gods
threw into the space
watch ye moon eclipse
fallinf from thy grace
watch all nations cry
all feared ov his name
praise the flame!
watch angels falling from the skies
praise the flame!
I killed thy god
my will is done!
thou art lord

rise me! rise me high!
lead thru the gates ov sun
rise me! rise me high!
where angels do not dare to fly
invite to feast ov gods
and let me drift away
leave flames ov infamy
and watch me kiss the stars

Art is art. In whatever shape or form.

Art is deeper than that, there's an underlying meaning behind every piece of art. You don't have to love art, just trying to get a feel of what the artist is trying to convey is enough. Art can be expressed through many forms, it has no boundaries. A digital picture for e.g cannot be compared to say a painted portrait of the person. The digital picture captures that one instant of time whilst the painting captures the emotion and many other aspects at an interval of time.

i'm not sure that that was the point i was trying to make. the surrealists, in the 1920's, intentionally tried to make art that didn't make sense. they attempted to create art using only the subconscious mind. one of their methods was to represent their dreams into their work. the result was some of the most "meaningful" art ever created. a person cannot create art that is trully random, because even when you are not consciously making decisions, you are making them subsconsciously--in which case your mind is free to express what you are trully feeling, without the censorship of rational thought. this idea can be applied to nearly every genre of art.

ah, well you can't deny that by reading your former reply it's hard to.. get all that. But I see what you're saiyng, and I agree. There is however.. lesser forms. Such as the first picture the OT posted. I don't believe there's much thuoght that has gone into that one, more like "I will try to make something random" and that's what the artist did.

I don't like most modern art, but there are still some pieces that I like too. You really have to look at each piece of art seperately. One can't simply generalize that "modern art is the best type of art"

um... where in this thread have i, or anyone, said that "modern art is the best type of art." it seems that nearly everyone has been making just the opposite generalization. and you are absolutely right when you say that you have to look at each piece of art separately. it was extremely ignorant for the threadmaker to make a sweeping generalization about an enormous class of art that includes more styles than he has heard of. it is ok to criticize individual works or even small bodies of work (as long as your criticism is supported by evidence,) but when the threadmaker said he did not like "modern art," i couldn't help but laugh since not only did he not know what "modern art" was, but he probably had not seen 99.99% of "modern art."

Most of it is pretentious bulls**t that hipsters love in an attempt to be more "sophisticated".....

I prefer the older artists who actually put EFFORT into their work rather than something a 2 year old could make.....

I'm not really a fan of "modern art", but saying it's not art mean you have to define what art is. Everything a human has an input to carrys meaning and has symbolism, so just being sybolic or meaningfull would make anything art. For example if you clasify something as art just because it represents something, you must accept a car, a glass and even my current typing motions as art. Whilst there is art to everything, so be considered primarily as art means that something sould have been create for the purpose of conveying deep, profound, personal and impatful meaning and/or symbolic represntation of human nature. So for someone to simply throw paint onto a canvas is not really art to me, theres no way I could possibly see any deep meaning to it unless I knew the person well myself, it dosn't convey a stron message. Now a film like the Shawshank Redemption is art as it conveys a deep and strong meaning to me.

It would depend on whether the artist created it with an intention in mind, or was it done without any rational thought whatsoever. By intention, I mean does it convey a message? Is there any meaning to what the artist has done?

who told you that art needs to be created with some sort of intended meaning in order for it to have meaning? meaning isn't always intended, and the meaning that people see in a work is rarely the intended meaning.

This is art, but it's not quality art. An art critic would be able to appraise the work.

this urinal is a sculpture called fountain by marcel duchamp. it is a joke and a work of art at the same time. duchamp submitted it to an art exhibit where it was rejected because the committee did not consider it art. does it have meaning? yes. the work is making fun of art and questioning the conventions of society and the art world. it asks the question: what is art and what isn't?

It would depend on whether the artist created it with an intention in mind, or was it done without any rational thought whatsoever. By intention, I mean does it convey a message? Is there any meaning to what the artist has done?

who told you that art needs to be created with some sort of intended meaning in order for it to have meaning? meaning isn't always intended, and the meaning that people see in a work is rarely the intended meaning.

Its not the meaning of it. Its the fact that its all apparently "art". Everything seems to be art these days, and its stupid. A shed, an un-made bed, frozen animals. How the hell is that art? Stupid man with the toilet did this...*shakes fist*

So how can you appraise whether something is art or not?

And what I should've said was that all art is open to interpretation by anybody. I agree with what you said that art doesn't always have an intended meaning.

Not do I. It's mostly terrible. I love Impressionism.
