Sure it may be good for a few quick facts and light information on a topic, but it certainly isn't the be all and end all.

Don't really think many people actually hate it, just have a general mistrust in reliability (which I believe is exaggerated) and/or just like joking about it. I personally love wikipedia.

Wikipedia is great for quick searches and such. I don't think many people hate it... it just can't be taken seriously all the time. I will never forget the time it said Carrot Top died by choking on a carrot. Life just isn't that funny.

It is a fantastic source for quick reference, but it shouldn't be used as a formal reliable source for research and school work. However, there are links at the bottom of the page where most of the info from Wikipedia comes from that can be used as a reliable source. There have been many studies conducted over the comparison of Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica. Wikipedia has 4 errors for every 3 errors Encyclopedia Britannica has. Take that as you like.

This. I go off at my brother when he says he heard something about a game that seems too good to be true, and then he tells me he found it out from Wikipedia when I hadn't heard such a thing from other sources. What I generally do is avoid anything that doesn't include reference. Helps during research assignments too, considering academics don't allow the use of Wikipedia, but nothing's said against their sources. :P

I remember hearing in a couple places that Wikipedia is just as accurate (and inaccurate, for that matter) as the Encyclopedia Britannica. So, basically...yeah, you can't believe everything you read, but I'm thinking it's actually a lot more reliable than many people give it credit for. Either that or Britannica is a heapa****.

It's about as accurate as most sources. It's a good starting place to get a basic idea, plus it includes sources which if you can find, makes for additional reading material on your tropic. It's not the definitive fact, but then again, nothing is.

Technical and specific details are ,a lot of times, off. editors have a tendency of going into speculation(and not indicating just how unfounded what they wrote is-which doesn't happen in proper encyclopedias) regarding smaller details.

Wikipedia is a great resource for information. Yes, anyone can edit it, but it's policed by its users pretty well, and much of the information is back by sources. If I were doing something for school it wouldn't be my only source of info but I would use it as a starting point.

Incorrect. Any smart person knows that if you're going to use Wikipedia you go straight to the references section.

I love wikipedia, but its basically common knowlage that it can sometimes be a bad source for information, and it can sometimes be really disturbing, such as the time when somebody edited the Ace Ventura page, god that ruined a lot of my childhood memories....

I agree.. The claim that students should "never" use it is ridiculous.. Its a great stepping stone in finding reliable first and secondary sources, you should never cite it or use information directly from the site for a paper.. What it should be used for is finding reliable sources in their bibliography on the site...

It's loved by those who understand the web and hated by those who don't. It tends to be misrepresented by the mainstream media as they are still struggling to understand the web, hence some of their idiotic ideas about web services.

There has actaully been analysis of it's reliability and it didn't fiar all that badly. It works out at only 30% more errors than Britanica and is ofcourse much more up to date and offers a much broader range of topics.

This is true. Always check the citations, if you want to learn about something important.

I mean, it's not like it's even hard to do. They're all at the bottom of the page.

Wiki is okay with me...it's not too difficult to spot the obvious wrong stuff (lack of citations or invalid citations).

Sometimes the Wiki staff does catch and remove questionable material.

True... A teacher I had in highschool actually told us more about this. She said use Wikipedia to get a overview on what you are researching, but nothing you write, should come directly from that site. Find other sites saying the same before you decide to write this and that.

Not everything is accurate, but the vast majority of it is. Important articles are closely moderated.

The only time I really ever question the accuracy of information is when there's no citation.

You can't always consider wiki to be relaible. sure its great for a starting point for a subject. but it should never be used entirly for school and work. I know some articals that are complitly bais. (And no one gives a **** about it.) Just because an artical has citations dosn't mean that it's reliable. IE blogs, random websites. It's best to find information on your own. Most of the authors are annomious and don't have a shed of chreidably. NO the bots aren't flawless.
