The last few horror movies I saw I've just felt nothing while watching. Even the jump scares (as lazy as they are and as much as I hate them) are doing nothing for me thanks to how tired and predictable they are.

The Evil Dead remake was just frustratingly stupid and gross.

Mama was a decent movie, but not scary.

Poltergeist was silly if anything.

The Conjuring had a few great scares, but lost me with the idiotic use of religious symbols.

Please recommend me some really scary movies that don't feature characters behaving like complete idiots too much.

I loved Insidious and The Shining. The Shining isn't really scary, but a great suspense movie nonetheless.

If you've ever seen "The Thing", though I feel that you have. Still, a classic that has it's cringe worthy moments, and honestly, aged fairly well. If you've already seen it, go see it again, and with an open mind.

Same. I used to read those 'movie FX' magazines when I was a kid and they focused heavily on the horrer genre. Movies just don't do anything for me as far as fear goes.

Now, get the lights off and enter the labs in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and I'll be pausing the game to creep out. :|

Agreed.

It's because the interactive nature of a game forces you to involve yourself in the atmosphere of the game (at least, if you're playing it right; lights out, headphones or awesome surround sound on). With a movie, you have to kind of help the movie. You have to really let the movie drag you in, and let your imagination wonder. Even then, it still has to be a decent movie, but that helps a whole lot.

I'd recommend watching some thriller-type movies, rather than straight up horror, for a while. Someone mentioned The Shining. That's a good one. Also, all the Hannibal movies, Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon, Hannibal... Red Dragon has, unfortunately, been treated to  two  movie adaptations, and neither have been up to par with Lambs and Hannibal. At least the later one, with Edward Norton and Anthony Hopkins, is decent. Don't watch Manhunter. Better yet, read the books.

Insidious was good until the ghostbusters showed up. Then it went downhill fast.

I understand what you're saying. I think all gore/slasher movies just become funny. I thought the Conjuring was GOOD, but not mind-blowing. I couldn't get over the fact that Peter from office Space was having trouble with demons in his house. Also some plots holes dragged the movie down.

Eh, I liked the way it ENDED, but yeah that last quarter bit of the movie was bad until the very end which I liked.

The Conjuring has a similar issue with the ending being much weaker than the rest of the movie, but it's a lot smaller of a chunk of the movie and the rest of that movie is sooo damn good. Seriously has a few scenes in there that are way scarier than any other horror movie I have seen and I am a big fan of the genre.

I'm with you, TC.  Only horror movie that did anything for me whatsoever as far as I can remember is the Orphanage.  Interestingly enough, some people actually have a brain chemistry that attracts them to horror movies (I don't think I'm one of those people).  I think it's that same brain chemistry that attracts those people to extreme sports (base jumps and the like).

watch things at night, alone, in the dark, on a wide screen TV, crank the surround sound and it'd probably help to lower the temperature to where you're actually cold, that's an effective technique and once the day comes where recreational marijuana is legal, smoke a lot of pot, I mean like a lot of pot, that will more than take care of it, and when that day comes you can stop watching movies alone and bring a like-minded friend along and maybe try to develop better sense of empathy and suspension of disbelief

What's the point of watching horror movies alone?  Unexpected groping is one of the selling points of horror movies.

well, if the point is to get physical with someone of the opposite sex then going to a scary movie it really should matter what the guy thinks, if the girl is scared then she'll be leaning into the guy and digging her head into his arm and chest at all the scary moments, if he's gonna try taking advantage of that I wouldn't think it matters much whether HE thinks it's scary or not

Its not really gross out. Neither was wes craven's original. It was more about evoking emotion and relating to the family and seeing how regular people can do insane things when they stare death in the face.

Me too. They keep releaseing ring movies in japan but I cant seem to find them scary at all.

Maybe the genre is already overdone.
