I found a wallet while

Take the cash - then anonymously mail the letter to the police or owner. You can use the cash but the credentials are useless to you - chances are they need those more then the cash anyways. I know I'd be pissed if someone found my wallet and didn't at least return the credentials.
I lost my wallet at Disney World. That's exactly what they did - they took the $30 or so that was in it, but returned the rest. Since I got my license and credit cards back, I didn't mind. (Not that it makes it right. It's still stealing, but I just remember being happy that I had everything else intact.)Take the cash - then anonymously mail the letter to the police or owner. Return it to the police, cash included. It's not your wallet, and not your cash.
Edit: Or if the ID shows the owner is local take it to him yourself. He might be glad and give you a small reward anyway.
This is what I would do, if there's an ID you should be able to contact the person. If it doesn't have any kind of ID etc in it I would keep the cash, if it had ID I would try to find the person myself. I don't really trust handing straight up money to anyone not even the police.

This. It's not a case of finders keepers, that's somebody's identifiable (I'm assuming there was ID) property.

I'd take the cash. If it had credit cards or ID then I'd take the cash but then hand it in. At the end of the day you'd have to ask yourself "would anyone return my wallet?". Where I live, if you drop your wallet then there's a 0% chance you'll see it again.
If we drop our wallet, then we're not taking enough care of it. I always keep my hand in the pocket that I keep my wallet, or have it in the inside jacket pocket (zipped 8) ).
I guess I'm one of the few that would return everything. :?

No, I would return everything. I got my own money anyway :P
We have an amazing amount of would-be thieves here. None of you are ever invited to my house.
If there's ID in the wallet, you can turn it in to the Police, or you can try to find the owner and give them back their wallet in person. If there's no ID, take it to the Police, and if no one claims it within a certain amount of time they'll let you have it.
I'd take 40% of the cash as a penalty for managing to lose their wallet, and 25% as my handling fee. Plus 17.5% tax.cjekBest answer.
Well first you look inside it to see if there is any ID to see if you can contact the person yourself. If there isn't then depending on how much is in it you can take it to the authorities. I say if its anything over a hundred dollars you take turn it in and if its under than you keep it.
Be a good person and give to the police. Back in highschool, I found someones lost wallet with lots on money in it, and right away I gave it to the school office. Just remember, how would you feel if someone found your wallet and instead of giving you your money back, instead takes all of it?
How could you possibly justify keeping someone else's money? You realize of course that to keep the money (if there is identification) is illegal (at least in the USA)...
I'm a little surprised (not really) at how many votes keep it has gotten. The honest thing to do is return, but of course you don't need me to tell you that.
Standard play here is to take the cash and return the wallet. I don't use a wallet anymore (use money clip and only use cash now, never credit) but when I was 24 I left my wallet in the back of a taxi. The wallet had $500 in cash, my driver's license, gym card, credit card, university ID and a bunch of other stuff in it - I called the cab company the next morning and they said they didn't have it. Then I got a call from some guy who said he had found it that night in the back of the cab. I met him at a local bar and he gave me the wallet back with all the cash inside which I thought was pretty amazing. I gave the guy $1200 and bought him a drink.
i'd keep the cash. People need to take personal responsibility, if you lose your wallet its your fault. Dont blame other people for not giving it back. I keep my wallet connected to my pants with one of hook things that go around your neck, but instead i use it to connect my wallet to my pants. I also carry very little cash 40 dollars at most. I buy everythign using debit card.
