Today in class (highschool) I had to read a few paragraphs aloud and I got really nervous and started pausing alot inbetween words and sentences and Im pretty sure I sounded really nervous(you always sound different to what you actually think, so I hope I didnt sound as nervous as I think). This was really embarassing. Any tips/Do you have this problem?

When I had to read I wasnt even focused on the reading. I was on autopilot and didnt even register what I was saying/reading, I was just thinking about how bad and nervous I sound

Did you sound like that because you were nervous or because you can't read?

Thinking about how bad you sound is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If doing something in front of people is something you find unnerving, just don't even pay attention to the fact that you have an audience.

Practice. Speak in front of your folks if you can, then your friends, etc.

Why all of YOU are here lol Speak for yourself To TC just try not to stress too much over it. Just concentrate on what your reading I guess when I used to read aloud I never registered it either not from nervousness though just...idk stupidity?Anyways next time just try to read in your normal speaking voice and focus on the text and nothing else.

Great advice. I recently spoke at a funeral. I didn't pay attention to the audience at all and I didn't stutter once.

I've just remembered the kid from South Park in the episode which Jesus was killed while trying to save Santa. He was trying to sing a christmas song or something. I can't seem to remember his name although he was on many episodes. Anyone wanna help?

I would recommend what others have said, read aloud in front of your family and friends. Even read aloud to yourself in front of a mirror. It really helps. I had the same problem as you do. Just try to tell yourself to relax, read at a slow decent pace and everything will alright... [QUOTE="OldTopics"]

The only problem I have with public reading is that I read the same speed I would when I am studying. So I basically read too fast.

Why are u so afraid of being judged?

No matter how perfect u sound there will always be some other person who thinks otherwise.

My ROTC teacher said that he is going to make us stop having that problem by the end of the year. He makes us do that ever day were their. He says stand up, look people in the eye, and read what you thought was important information. He says that thenumber one fear in america is public speaking. I'm better at it. Just try not to rush keep doing it.

Try practicing reading aloud to yourself, then you'll gradually get more comfortable.

I never liked the whole "pick someone to read" thing. I end up reading ahead and/or zoning them out. I think it's better to read silently, at least for me. I can see the reasoning behind why it's used so often though.

I agree with everything except for the bolded. I think that looking someone in the eye while giving a public speech is a very good way to become nervous, because you begin to read their every reaction and worry about it. The best public speech, in my view, is one given without even one thought provided regarding the audience's reception of it. The only thing one can give is their best, and if their best is not good enough, then so be it; worrying about whether one's best is good enough by paying attention to the audience reception is not going to make one's best any better. When I give a speech, I give it for me, because I care about what I'm saying; the audience is secondary.
