i come to you guys for advice (big mistake i know).  I am IM'ing right now with this girl that has been my freind for like a year now.  i really want to ask her out but im totally scared that if she says no, everything will totally suck.  and dont say that it wont cause i know it will.

You'd know if she had a thing for you. If you have any doubt you should feel her out better and for ****'s sake, don't aske her out online.

DO NOT ASK HER OUT ONLINE. do it in person. and though right after it happens, it will hurt to be rejected (if you are and I'm not saying you will be) but the pain will numb. Life goes on. You miss 100% of the shots you never take.
