I guess the chicken did come first.

Yes. But the REAL question is where did the ORIGINAL chicken come from? ooooooh... I sense a 'creationism' debate

Notice the bit at the end: "But the researchers have not yet got an answer to how the protein-producing chicken existed in the first place."

So the scientists haven't really discovered anything to solve the question.

Sounds like a time warp backwards or something religious.

Really? I mean, REALLY?

This "dilemma" only applies to creationists. It's obvious that the chicken evolved from other animals. In fact, dinosaurs (from whom birds are though to have evolved from) already layed eggs millions of years before chickens existed.

Still doesn't explain where life originated from.

"But the researchers have not yet got an answer to how the protein-producing chicken existed in the first place." They just had to throw that in there. lol I still hold that through genetic mutation and using the theory of natural selection as the framework, the egg must have come first. Think about it: something close to a chicken lays an egg and that egg has enough genetic deformities and beneficial characteristics to produce more offspring than the rest of its brethren. Therefore the egg of what we call "a chicken" (I use quotation marks because I don't think any specific genetic coding down to the letter exists to classify a chicken as a chicken so we're arguing pedantically a little bit here) must have been first. I've solved science.

No, it doesn't. But that's not what we are discussing here now is it?

Let's just keep it in the context of the debate: What came first the chicken or the egg? Not what came first the creation or the creator.

T-Rex --> egg --> chicken... seems like the egg came before the chicken, and yes, chickens are a direct descendant of the T-Rex :P.

Theories about the appearance of life have almost nothing to do with evolution.

That being said, I'm betting when life first appeared there were no eggs and no chickens. Therefore it has nothing to do with the current discussion. Which shouldn't even be a discussion anyway.

"Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"

That's just a figure of speech. I wouldn't take it so literally.

*facepalm at analysis* The writer doesn't seem to have noticed that all eggs have shells and all birds and reptiles can lay eggs not just chickens. The first chicken egg was laid by another bird similar to a chicken.
