They taught us this in high school several times, and I've heard teachers in college try to explain this as well. Basically they teach that any stress induced by negative things such as breaking up with bf/gf, parents fighting, dealing with social problems etc as "bad stress." Then they go on to say "Oh but there's also good stress! If you are busting your ass to do homework or study for a test then this is good stress you are feeling!"

There is no such thing as "good stress." They make this up as an excuse for the poor education system or poor studying skills. Stress, despite what it is caused by raises chemicals such as cortisol in your body, and is not good for you nor fun to put up with. People shouldn't have to stress out from school, they shouldn't have to cram for tests and do excessive amounts of homework. They should evenly distribute the workload throughout the week and keep stress levels at bay. Unfortunately this isn't always possible, especially with college, the reality is if you're trying to obtain a hard degree you will probably have to stress out a lot. "Good stress" is just BS they made up to justify the negative effects of working your butt off.

I don't think that stress is good. But, at certain times...it can be for the better.

It is good stress. The problem with people and stress though is, you can't stress yourself forever. You don't lift weights (stress your muscles) for 3 months straight to get fit do you? No, you take breaks in between. Most people forget to do this with their brain - they take insufficient amount of breaks and this turns "good stress" into "bad/useless stress". The matter of fact is, suffering/stress is a blessing, you need suffering/stress to grow, to learn from mistakes etc. Meditation, sufficient rest at night, not overworking yourself, taking vacations are ways to turn some of your bad stress into good stress.

Stress is alright unless it reaches an overload type of situation. It's almost impossible to not have stress unless you're in a non-dreaming vegetative state. Stress is simply an emotional and physical response to external stimuli.

I've never had people try and say that there was "good stress" :? Stress is stress for a reason: you get overwhelmed by feelings of panic, anxiety, and fear over something. I can't imagine the cause of stress would determine whether it's good or bad, it's just bad.

Yah, I've never been lectured about this "good stress." In fact some of my professors (now and in the past) tell us not to stress to much about grades/tests (which is hard not to do).

Well, I think "good" stress and "bad" stress vary only by levels. Stress is "bad" when you let it overwhelm you. Stress, in normal doses, is a positive, motivating, and actualizing force.

Yeah, especially when these grades and tests will have a part in your whole future. What they should try and do is help people to deal with the stress, instead of telling them not to stress (most people can't control "stress")

So basically limited quantities/low level stress to get things done = ok. I still wouldn't call it "good" stress.

Exactly. Yah, I've rarely gotten any helpful tips in reducing/dealing with the stress. I feel most professors think that their students have more time than they actually have to devote to just one class.

Stress is important...just like pain
-pain tells you that something is wrong...example: that fire is hot, it causes pain, I need to move away
-stress is a motivator...something stresses you, you need to do something to alleviate/get rid of that stress...example: I am stressed b/c I need to make a good grade, I will study to alleviate that stress

Just as with pain, there can be sensory overload...too much pain is no longer 'beneficial...same as stress

Not only stress can be a motivator, it is essential in self improvement. In sports, it is what separate good athletes from the great ones. There's many who can perform well under normal circumstances, but they choke while it matters the most. Why? Because they couldn't handle the stress in the situation. If handle properly, stress become the driver for one to overcome adversity and alleviate one's level of performance

well... in my psychology class this is called "eustress" and yes, it is a "good" stress and it is not only applicable to school. eustress comes from stress that pushes people to maximize potential or work for the better which would ultimately lead to something good... like marriage (hopefully), a pay raise, promotion, newborn child..... hell taking a vacation causes a lot of stress too.

It's called eustress. Stress that makes you feel good.
