I Hate My Band.

I started wiith these guys a while ago, just messing around. Finally got a good drummer and it all starts falling in place. Things get serious, write some songs, etc. When we started, I was totally into this, but now... no. I'm an artist damnit, i'm in it for the art. they just want to pump out commercial pop and ape other indie bands. what's worse is now they want to take a more active role in songwriting. the bass player, who is also a good friend of mine, recently wrote a terrible love ballad for his girlfriend and wants it in our setlist. the other band members approve of it and say the songs i write are 'too dark' and we need to lighten the mood a bit. One of them even suggest we start doing lady gaga and katy perry covers...ughhhhhaaaah

Just leave the band...

That sounds awful. I'd ditch 'em 'cause I wouldn't want to be ascosiated with the production of awful music.

I wonder, what sort of music is it that you wanna do that they obviously don't?

Why not do a KP or gaga cover? you could only improve upon them.

Sounds like you just want to do a different kind of music.

then go and start your own band where you have complete creative control. it's what I did as I knew I could never handle not having much control over it so my band is me and a friend who does drums. the debut EP is nearing release too after 2 months work. it's either all control or no control as far as I'm concerned, that's why I'm such a great bassist.

I say move to the other side of the country, start an East coast/West coast style battle and let it all end in bloodshed.

If its YOUR band then tell em to GTFO and if it is not then just leave.

Ditch the lot of them and try to start over. Good music will only be made by people that want to make music, not people that want to be "famous" or impress their stupid girlfriends.

You guys are going to argue and disagree. Its a collaboritive. Tell them that you think these new pop songs are shallow. They arent good enough. There is a difference between good and bad pop. Raise your band's standards or leave it.

Sounds like all of you arn't ready. You should just leave...Its obvious you want to write material yourself (which imo is ALWAYS a bad idea) and they are already letting the fame get to their head...and they're no bodies for crying out loud.

you could create a lighter song that makes fans and you happy........just saying, not all pop music is bad by default.

If you have any self respect you will not do any of the stuff they're suggesting, it could take a while but you can find/start a new band which will be people who want to do similar stuff to what you want to do.

If they want light, I dare you to play Sesame Street music.
