People make a lot of judgements about your personality based on extrernal stuff like the way you speak and your voice.

If you listened to my low, monotone voice you might conclude that I am a neat person who is logical and not very emotional.

The funny thing is that what I just said doesn't describe my personality at all. It's just what my voice suggests. I don't know if everyone would get those ideas from my voice, but I know I did when I heard it recorded.

It's annoying because it makes me self concious and I feel like nobody I meet will get to know me.

It also sounds really dorky when I sing or rap (I just tried it for fun a couple times).

One interesting thing I realized is that it sounds ok when I talk in a fake voice...usually with a fake accent or something. It also sounds normal if I say things quietly. Another thing to note is that I don't hear it like it is. It sounds different when I listen to it recorded. It still sounds like me...except way more monotone and annoying than how it sounded to me when I siad it.

So what do you think this means? Is it some kind of actual problem? Is anyone else having this same issue?

EDIT: Btw this doesn't mean I don't talk loud enough. We're talkin' tone not volume.

You can't help how your voice was made. You shouldn't let it bother you.

Voice transplant? Honestly I don't know what you can do. Maybe you can get one of those things that you place on your neck and it makes your voice sound funny.

I would love to have such a deep voice! Grr, why do only people who hate their voices get it? :cry:Rikardur
Well it's monotone too. That's the real problem. Generally speaking though the voices that are considered deeper are more monotone. Anyway, I don't know why you'd want a deep voice. I wish I had an emotional, vulnerable sounding highish voice.

Hmm. Guess I don't really understand what it's like for people who have a monotone voice then.
I used to be quite shy at one point in my life, and so I kinda kept my voice at a certain tone. I was never monotone, but you probably know what it's like for people who are not expressive and lack enthusiasm. Over the years I have just become much more outgoing and expressive with the way I talk and move and it really changed who I am completely. So you think you are incapable of doing the same?

Ok I'm confused about some things. For one, what do you mean lack enthusiasm? I already explained I have plenty of emotion and enthusiasm, it just doesn't show up when I talk. And second, what do you mean it changed who you are? I would think that changing your mannerisms only changes how people see you. It doesn't change your personality. If I talked with an english accent all the time, my personality wouldn't change at all.

If I talked with an english accent all the time, my personality wouldn't change at all.

Well at one point people always thought I was high or something (Even though I don't do drugs), that was mostly because of how I wasn't enthusiastic with the way I talked and acted. I kinda kept myself as a whole at one tone, and it just made me come out looking like a robot or something. That was years ago; though, and now I have become much more outgoing with myself and the way I am, and it kinda just changed the way people see me.

Anyways, I guess that's not really your case. You say you know how to express yourself very well, but it just doesn't come out the same when you talk? I really don't know what to say to that. I guess some people are just born that way? I dunno. My main thought was maybe you just lack enthusiasm when it comes to talking, and you don't let yourself be who you could be because of that.

I used to have a similar issue as well. One night I was bored out of my mind and started to play with my phone. I recorded my voice and thought I sounded so stupid. It sounded deep but I could still identify my voice from when I was a kid. It also sounded like I was speaking through my nose-- which makes sense, I guess, because I have a big nose. So yeah, I hated it for a long time and spoke real low and in this monotone voice. Then I was forced to get a job and guess what job I got. I was a telemarketer. At first I hated it because they told me to hold my ear so I can hear my own voice and that really made me insecure because I didn't wanna listen to my own voice. But I overcame it. They told us to speak loud and confident and I did just that. At first I sounded corny but I adjusted my tone to what I felt actually fit me. I eventually quit the job but how they told me to speak really stuck with me. I started to speak louder and with a little more enthusiasm. I don't force myself to sound like that, it's just that I'm comfortable in how I speak now. Besides that, I also find my comments and remarks to be more interesting when I project myself as opposed to when I spoke very softly. Now, I'm also planning on majoring in psychology so I gave speech patterns a thought. Besides your tone, also focus on your dialog. I believe that some people sound more confident in what they say if they feel it's natural. For example: A simple answer like "I do not think so" may sound weird coming from certain people (because you're pronouncing the "do not"). It may sound better just going for "I don't think so." This is just me though. I focus on the way I say things because I feel like some things come across better - and suit my personality-- if I rearrange the way I say it. But on top of all that, it could just be a confidence issue. Many people who talk low are usually shy or insecure. Coming across loud may also come across as confident and that's putting yourself out there-- which some people may be too insecure to do so they say things lower so there's less of an impact. Be confident in yourself, project what you have to say because if you make it seem like it's something that's not worth saying aloud then why should anyone care as much as you do? All-in-all, just start speaking louder. You may feel weird about it at first but eventually you'll adjust. It's your voice-- use it or just shut up and cry. Hope that helped.

Nah, i don't think i'd ever want to get into public radio. I'm not exactly the most enthusiastic person and i keep to myself for the most part. But, you can generally be an enthusiastic person, but it just doesn't come through in your voice, because you lack vocal inflections, like i mentioned earlier. I'm sure you could do voice exercises.

no i'm just saying having a deep voice doesn't neccessarily make you have a monotone voice. try singing a song and put a lot of effort into it, record it and tell me if you sound monotone if you do, hope is lost

Same here dude! Everyone thinks i'm high all the time because of the way I talk. I sounds normal to me but others say it's really low and kind of drawn out when I talk, I dont get it!

people say the same thing about me sometimes. be more enthusiastic
