Alright, so here's the situation:

I'm a first semester sophomore at a school. It's going well. Studies are smooth, parties and rough and my credits are looking pretty good. Anyway, I pay for my school out of a trust fund that I got because blah, blah, blah, private stuff. So my friends are going to Europe and Israel for six months. Leaving in two weeks, coming back in June of next year.

They invited me to go and I really, really want to. Here are the issues though: I would be leaving my school, my job... wouldn't be home for Diablo III, either. :P

Also, since it is such a spur-of-the-moment move, I would be forced to take 5,000 or so out of that trust, extending any loans I'll have at the end of school.

What do you guys think? Get sucked into the system more or enjoy my life a little?

Depends on what benefit you might garner from the trip. You have to weigh that against what you are giving up. I personally wouldn't, not so early in school (you may never be motivated enough to come back), but it might offer something you never thought of and change your life forever. It's a decision you are going to have to make, and forum denizens can't answer it for you.

if you want to go then i say go. life is short so when you're young you should grab opportunities like that. it's the kind of thing that will teach you things you won't learn in school and if you don't, and make a plan to do later, you will most likely never get around to it.

Do it! Don't think, just do it! I did pretty much thesame, went to Asia for 6 months, messed myself up and just went crazy. It was completely worth it, changed me for the better I think.

You should ask to see if your school has any programs so that you can take leave of absences without having 'drop out'. This way you can keep your credits and your position at the school and come back without too much hassle.

If your school doesn't allow you to do something like that, it's highly likely that you would essentially 'drop out' from school, and you'd have to reapply when you come back. The credits you've already taken might not be transferrable either. This would mean you basically just wasted a year of your life.

You play too much Final Fantasy XIII. Only someone who plays that game could come up with cheesy lines like that. And moms are tough.

Agreed; presumably Europe will still be there either after school or some time where a visit would coincide with breaks. Also, leaving a job with short notice is bad ju-ju

Well, I would look into how much it would cost you and whether or not you could make it work with your job. If you have money saved up for college, I wouldnt dip into that. Besides, it's Diablo 3 man.

Personally... I would not. It's not even the impulsion/money thing, but I've never seen the attraction in studying abroad, and likewise opportunities. I like it here in my home city.

If you've access to the means and the opportunity then have at it for God's sake man! Schools and jobs will always be there to return to afterwards.

Travelling is something you never forget, do it, for sure. You only live once.

Not necessarily with those particular friends in a similar sort of experience though *shrugs* If he's intelligent and smart enough about it he'll be able to pick things up again on his return in a similar enough fashion to how they are now, it's not like taking time out from school or leaving a job is a rare thing, besides, I'm inclined to think carpe diem and all that.

my personal opinion is that once you start school, you should finish it.

with that said, if you can go on this trip and jump right back into school when you get back, go for it.

Or you can simply take a couple weeks off and go visit your friends instead of spending a whole6 months (thats a long time, dude) overseas. It seems pretty unreasonable to drop everything youre doing for a spontaneous, fairly long term, act.

Stay enrolled in school, and go visit your friends overspring break or something.

But would he still have the financing? Seems if he takes the trip....particularly such a long trip...he will dip into his college money...and without a job....I don't think he's finishing school anytime soon.

Can you find a way to do both? If your exams are early enough in April you could meet up with your buddies right after and still get a solid ~2 month trip in.

I'd finish my schooling first, pay all that off then reward yourself with a trip. You might come back from over seas not wanting to get back into study, plus your family will probably kill you with how you used that fund.

Yes, I also couldn't help but think the thread title was superb trolling the moment I read it.

I have a huge life decision to make... So I'll ask a bunch of complete strangers who have no sypmpathy for me, nor do they enderstand my personal needs and behaviors.

It's a bad, unhealthy habbit that people on the internet tend to make a lot, and it seems to become more and more popular on the forums I visit.

I don't think I would. But then again, I have a tendency to not try things, and I've never been on a trip for longer than a week. Not to mention, Israel doesn't sound all that appealing to me as a vacation destination. But hey, it's your choice! You may feel different about Israel and the whole idea. Plus more loans suck.

You should consider studying abroad, universities usually make it cheaper for you. Also, I advise against dropping out of school just because your friends invited you last minute to a trip..

**** no. Look, I know we're all young and juvenile and we have to seize the day by the balls, but freshman year is ****ing important. I know wayyyy too many people now that are well into their 20s, have too much debt to pay off, and are all over the place with school because of instances just like this where they decided to travel the world. If money is even the slightest issue for you, forget it. Unless you're just going to be doing your undergrad and you have more than enough money to pay for your education, the trip, and a downpayment on a house in 4-5 years time, then go for it, but I'd highly suggest otherwise. There's plenty of time to travel the world, but compromising your education isn't a fair trade.

The problem with freshmen is, they do this then never turn back. They live their undergrad years like they're their last with no regards for the longevity of their decisions or current, prosperous status. Plenty of these people have their educations paid for by mommy and daddy, and don't realize that being away from school for a year will put you way behind everyone else from a cognitive standpoint. Edit: misread first post, OP is a sophomore, but the same ideologies still apply.

Again I have to disagree, a lot of students decide to take a gap year to discover themselves and what they want to do with their lives. This is an opportunity for the TC to do that. Looking back on my life I wish I had taken a gap year instead of going directly into post-secondary, it would have turned out a lot better for me.

I suppose a lot of it would have to do with what field one is breaking into to. Obviously, I'd rather be sipping wine in France right now than cramming for finals, but at the same time I'd fear my presence in the field I'm breaking into would be demolished by being away from studying for a full year. Even over the summer, a noticeable decline in knowledge pertaining to one's major is observed. Yeah, it'd be fun, but as it draws to a close I'd personally fear the repercussions of such bliss.

Life is full of spur of the moment things, not everything is planned. And from what I gathered from the TC's original post is that he isn't just doing it because his friends are going but that he genuinely wants to go and visit those places.
