I have a question for those of you who don't believe in life after death.

For the people that don't believe in life after death, I have this "question."
Would you pay for a delicious cake, that when you finish eating it, you would completely forget that you ever ate it?
Would you write a 3-paged essay about why you love your favorite band so that you could meet them for a day, but then forget you ever met them the next day?
Would you read a 1000 paged book that would touch your heart, but after you finish the last page, you forgot you ever read the book?

Ultimately, would you live and enjoy your life, create priceless bonds with people, accomplish so much, and live throughso many experiences,to die one day and forget any of it happened, all of your memories, joys and experiences disappearing with your conscience? Of course you wouldn't feel anything so it wouldn't matter, but as you are feeling right now, what are your thoughts?
I'm by no means trying to put anything on you ormake you believe anything, I'm just asking the question and wondering what your thoughts are.
I personally don't believe in a "hell", but I do believe that what you do in your life now will affect your position in a non-material life to come.

what do you mean would I? Of course I would live and enjoy my life. Dying is out of my hands though, and rationally when our brain dies so does our ability to percieve anything. It's not my fault im not gonna have a though let alone a memory when I die, it is what it is.

The difference being those people don't believe they have a choice. They're given a "cake that they won't remember eating once it's done" with no other choice. The thing is though just because you die and you're gone doesn't mean you've done nothing. Families remember people, history remembers people and we can change the world even in minor ways. There being an after life or not doesn't change what happens here on earth.

If anything, knowing that once you are gone you don't remember or can't experience such pleasures makes one want to enjoy them and strive to achieve such things in life more knowing that the time they have while alive is the only time they will ever have.

I'ld prefer to remember it as the things i tend to really enjoy effect my thinking and illuminate things. However in the case of something like the cake i'ld be happy with forgetting it. I would note that i tend not to take photos, write blogs or make any real recording of my own life. I have a question for you. How can the memory exist after death in a soul when the concept makes no sense to begin with? When someone gets a head injury they change (whether it be forgetting things or a personality shift due to the injury), proving that memory and things like it are tied to the brain. If a soul and memories were independent of the body someone could suffer severe head injuries and always retain their memory.

Now the idea of a soul could be real but until you give some logical proof you are just throwing around what you think is right.

The desire for eternal life is just another desire. I find solace in the fact I am here right now, and can enjoy the moments as they pass by. The fact we don't know for sure what comes after death means we shouldn't focus on it, and try and make this life, here and now, as enjoyable and free of pain and suffering as we can. However, pretty much all suffering comes from things always changing, so we need to find some way to escape relying on the desire to find constancy in things (because trying to find something permanent in a place where things are always changing is a fruitless endeavor), and just live in the moment. If it isn't obvious already, I am a Buddhist, and to the Buddha, questions like "is life eternal" or "is there life after death" or "is there a God" are useless questions, since they cannot be answered. So one should concentrate on disconnecting oneself with one's desire to find the answers to those questions, and just live life as it passes by.

Yes. In the end, there's an end. I think that our time is precious and we should cherish it and live it to the fullest. It is not that when we die we will forget and start over. It is over and will never return. Your actions and what you do will reflect when you pass out. People will remember you and if you are lucky, things you did and said will go on, and in some way you will live on the next generations. As for your life, enjoy the time while you have.

When I die, I wont be able to reflect on all the things I lost.

I will be dead an no longer exist.

I will live my life, enjoy it and not worry about pleasing some kind of higher power. I am not going to spend my life, worshipping something that does not effect me in any way and is a giant waste of time and could be doing something more constructive like watching a movie. I also do not need religion to tell me what is right and wrong.

To me religion is a giant sham that is no longer necessary in todays world.

Just my 2 cents. Some people believe in religion and thats great, but I dont.

Unless I'm the only one that doesn't remember every single cake they've ever paid for and eaten, I'd say the answer to this is a resounding yes.

I find the idea that nothing I do really matters in the great scheme of things quite refreshing. Once I realize my own worthlessness and insignificance, I can really enjoy the life I'm living right now, for being infinitely more than what would exist if I didn't. My existence makes no difference to the universe, but since I can appreciate it, it obviously makes a difference to me, here and now.

I have a question for you, OT. This world will eventually cease to exist. With a certainty of a 100%. The sun will die and explode and this planet will be smashed to dust. That means that everything in this planet is pointless and we should destroy everything, since it will be completely gone in years to come??

Uh no; that's then, this is now. Future catastrophe does not invalidate present existence. I'd have thought that was pretty obvious.

Point exactly. Future "extintion of existence" (no afterlife), does not invalidate our present existence. Time in here is precious and not having an etenity beyond does not make our life worthless, but MORE PRECIOUS!

just by looking at the TC post you can see why people believe in an afterlife. it's just easier think about.

i don't believe in an afterlife, but i don't really think of death.

it's just a part of life, and even though you do lose all your memories, you don't know you do.

the only reason it seems bad is because you're conscious and you have all your thoughts & memories.

What was the 17th cake you ate. Please describe the event to me in detail.

Clearly your life is a waste if you can't even do this.
