So i remember reading about this movie in a thread a few weeks ago and I finally got the chance to watch it last night, and WOW was it stuffed up, I lliked the movie still but it was insanely brutal, I cant believe they could make movies that brutal back in 1979/80. Also I read up ad all animal deaths in the movie are real, which just adds to the notoriety of this movie. If you've seen this whats your opinion on it?

Salo? That seems to be the exception, because a lot of people consider it for art because it was indeed well made by the controversial Pasolini. I don't like it and see very little difference between that and something like I Spit on your Grave.

From my understanding it's all just stock footage of animals fighting and killing each other. I don't remember ever hearing about the filmmakers themselves killing animals and getting it on film.

Six animals were killed on camera for scenes in the film. The director went to jail for ten days accused of murdering cast members, because the second half of the film had a style similar to that of The Blair Witch project, when the actors became present in court he was found not guilty. The reason he did not go to jail for the animal killings the film was shot in the Amazon rain forest, though his film was banned in Europe because of the animal killings and is still banned in some countries today. When people refer to the turtle scene they mean a scene where the three actors in the film drag a large turtle and cut off its head and proceed to disembowel it and then cook it and eat it...

I don't know if it's just me, but I have a serious problem with the torture of animals.....more than humans in fact......not sure why....just animals get to me. Can't watch that. I had an extremely hard time watching that dairy farm beating video that was posted earlier....that was just simply cruel....punching goats in the head and what not. Rediculous.

I've actually not seen the movie as of yet and I'm a little confused about just why the animal scenes are considered particularly "brutal" because they're real. From what I've read they are beheaded before being consumed or taken apart which sounds fairly humane as far as things go and I've seen similar things such as a real turtle being slaughtered and cooked in Itami's "Tampopo" or the ritualistic ox killing in "Apocalypse Now". Is there more to it than what I am reading or is this just a case of average people not having seen live animals get slaughtered before?

Watch the movie if you want to know the theme. It makes it very obvious towards the end. I don't like dissecting movies for other people.

The theme was good but they could have done it without all that gore and violence, I can see why they did use a cannibal tribe, but the scenes weren't really necessary.

I have no problem with a film that uses this theme. But unfortunately Cannibal Holocaust comes across as nothing more than exploitation. There is no real moral to the film. It's violence for the sake of violence. If this film is like a mirror for the audience, shouldn't they feel bad about what they are seeing, rather than celebrate it? It may be an interesting insight into humanity that we are all savages, but celebrating it is not the way to go. I can be as savage as the next person. But I don't see that as a good thing.
