What took me awhile to understand was the genre that this movie was in. Usually "romantic comedy" has such negative connotations to it, mostly being uninteresting for audiences to watch. But this movie was pretty enjoyable.
Some of it is riotously funny and I like JGL a lot. But the rest of the film is padded with visual gimmicks because the narrative is hollow. A cute structure without a lot of depth. Also Zoey D. is a bland actress. The ending also makes me want to vomit.
For its supposed innovation its actually a really conservative movie compared to something (superior) like Juno.
Easily my favorite movie of last year. I am Tom, JGL's performance had me in tears from laughter and because ive been there. The supporting cast (his two friends) were also hilarious. I have probably watched it 20 times by now.
Also loved how relateable both Tom and Summer were. They listened to real music, discussed real things. It always seems like movie characters are so fake.
