Hmmm I'm not so sure. Here in NZ a lot of social liberties are being restricted, ironically in the interest of becoming more liberal. For example, the state dictates how a child can and cannot be disciplined. This sort of thing appears to be a gradual descent into the common definition of communism.

Communism as introduced immediately would not work as it would be such a huge culture shock it would inevitably be overturned. But if it is something that is filtered in over a long period of time, it could be introduced with out people even noticing. Hence, working, due to complete ignorance of the situation.

Is it truly ignorance is it more complacency? Governments get involved with personal affairs all the time, it doesn't mean they will lean towards a communistic regime. People could just be desensitized to government BS and just take it.

It totally depends on the leader. If the leader is really bad and corrupted, doesn't work.

If the leader is really nice and doesn't do dumb thing, it works.
