I myself is a Hong Kong Asian and my skin colour is not that deep like those in Indonesia. My look is Ok actually. I am not wealthy. Is the race discrimination very serious in USA? That place seems quite boring to a Asian but I think I am ok there.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
I'm not sure about US but in canada, you will be just fine. There is still discrimination going on in Canada but still, I bet it's less than in US.bloody1f4knight
You'd be wrong. Racial discrimination doesn't occur much.
racial discrimination occurs so frequently here that it's not even reported any longer. It's no longer front page news. don't believe anyone who says that it doesn't happen.feryl06
FYI....racial discrimination would entail a major lawsuit were it to occur.:|
As long as you know english well enough to communicate on the fly, you'll be fine here.
You should also check which cities have larger Chinese populations if you want to be around other Chinese when you move here.
There are millions of asians living in the US. In fact, most large cities have significant chinese populations where they speak mandarin. You should do just fine.sonicare
I speak Cantonese actually and reason I will move to USA is that I am afraid of China. I am a Chinese but I don't want to live under the evil communist government. Hong Kong cannot last that freedom society so long and would be deeply ruined by the mainland China forces.
Discrimination of various types still happens in the US, but is much more implicit than overt. Rather than give you anecdotal evidence like many of the above posters, I'm going to link you to various reports on discrimination in the US.
UN Faults US on Racism, March 7, 2008
US Human Rights Network, which includes over 250 US Civic groups slams US for 'abysmal' record on race. Dec 10, 2007
Chinese made report on US Human rights, includes chapters of various discrimination in the US. March 13, 2008
I wasn't even going to post in this thread until other posters seemed to make out that racism is small time in the US. Compared to many nations it isn't as bad, but it certainly still exists.

Have you got any actual evidence to back up your claims that racism "doesn't occur much", or are you just going to be going off anecdotal evidence.

Obviously racism occurs. It occurs anywhere there are 2 different groups of people. Unless you live in utopia, you're going to find it. However, racism against asians is not a horrible issue in the states. I'm sure elements of discrimination exist against asians here, but most asians don't feel excessively threatened in this country. There are other minority groups were it is a larger issue. I think the TC will be just fine in the US, especially considering the incredibly large chinese population this country has.

I agree that racism against Chinese or East Asian peoples isn't that bad in the US, I should have said it myself really.
But I only posted my links because some people in this thread were acting like racism hardly exists in the US, which I found quite disturbing because it's pretty much pure propaganda you're telling to a non-American.

Racism itself is not as prevalent...and discrimination and racism are two different things. Using links for proof doesn't work, by the way, when you don't have first hand knowledge. Stop arguing with those that do.;)

Racism is a form of discrimination. :|
As for the above, yeah I'm sorry the UN and 250 US Civic Human Rights groups are all wrong. Again you're using anecdoatl evidence to counteract substantiated and verified evidence. But it's OK, keep hiding your head in the sand. ;)

No, I'm saying you have no experience nor knowledge of what it's like to live here. You live elsewhere....

Oh my, my my.
Firstly, whether racism is or is not discrimination is beyond my initial post. Because my links showed quite clearly that racism still exists in US society.
Secondly I was waiting for someone to tell me I didn't know what I'm talking about, it's like I can see into the future.
Thirdly, Racism is Discrimination: Dictionary.com
"2.treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, cl@ss or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit: racial and religious intolerance and discrimination."
From Merriam Webster, Discrimination:
"3 a:the act, practice, or an instance of discriminating categorically rather than individuallyb:prejudiced or prejudicial outlook, action, or treatment "
I can't believe how much one man can be owned in a thread. Anyway, still gonna tell me I don't live in the US so I shouldn't comment.

*sigh* Discrimination relates to housing, jobs etc. Hence, the REASON I SAID A LAWSUIT WOULD ENSUE. Racism is not the same. It's feeling that one's race is superior to others. One can be racist and not discriminate.

The act of discriminating can relate to race also.
But again this is all a stupid side argument, since the links I posted weren't about housing or job related discrimination they were about racism, maybe you should read them. And yes job discrimination based on race is a form of discrimination.

And FYI...I never said discrimination wasn't based on racism. I said they are different...and thus, they are.
FYI again...obviously if you based your government on racism...discrimination would follow. You have missed the point.

Racism, Dictionary.com:

The United States still has plenty of racism.
US Human Rights groups, including 250 US Civic groups attack US on "abysmal" US racism record:
"The network said US minorities including African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics and Muslims face discrimination in a range of areas including voting, policing and education."
FYI again...obviously if you based your government on racism...discrimination would follow. You have missed the point.

Racism, Dictionary.com:

I addressed that already...I suggest you read the first five words...that is how discrimination comes into it. Racism itself is a belief that one's race is superior. That does NOT entail discrimination by definition. One can, of course, discriminate if they chose...but it's not inherent in the definition.
Yeah I mean the US government is a racist POS. Thanks for clarifying that up. ;)

The US government is not based on racism. There are laws in place against discrimination and the government hires minorities. Seriously dude...

And like I have said, discrimination can be a form of racism, if you are being discriminated against on racial grounds.
And the articles which I linked to showed that people were being discriminated against on racial grounds.
I mean if you actually read the articles you'd know this. ;)

It's not doing enough to tackle racism, and has been lambasted by the UN and its own Human Rights groups for the increasing amounts of racism in the US.
Again you'd know all this if you read the links provided. ;)

False. My father is a racist, but when he sells houses or does business, he doesn't discriminate.
I live in New York. I am of Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian lineage. Only once in my entire life, in the city of New York, outside of Junior high idiocy, have I ever experienced racism of any sort.
You're links simply aren't proof that racism is prevalent here in the US, especially when people who live here themselves tell you otherwise. You've already lost the argument with LJ, so I suggest you bow out.

A few instances will occur whereever people are that are different than each other. Has been happening throughout history. However, it's not like it was years ago. You wouldn't know that...you have no knowledge of the US except what you read. Now again...have to head to work.

Anecdotal evidence against internation UN and Coalition of US based Human Rights Groups. Hmmm, I wonder which is more correct??
You know having this conversation in this thread has pretty much shown me why racism is still so prevalent in the US. People just don't want to see or acknowledge it, even when firm substantiated evidence is put in front of them. It really is an indictment on some segments of the US community.

I gave those links a chance, and they're fail. The UN committee looks for racism in places where it isn't, and rejects the Justice System's claims, however reasonable they may be.
Your "evidence" is not evidence, because it's poorly manufactured.
It's not that people here close their eyes to racism, its that youneed to prove the US is prevalently racist.
You also didn't address the point I made about how racism and discrimination are different, which leads me to believe you don't want to.
