Hey all, I just failed college algebra for the second time and now I have to pay out of state tuition which costs 750 bucks to take it again. Im good at basically every subject and get a's and b's and am already halfway through my associates degree but I've always had serious problems with math. So if I were to take it again with my other classes its gonna cost 1000 bucks. To top it all off I have to replace my car transmission for another 1000 or so. My parents told me they will not help me at all :(. Im not exactly swimming in money so this is gonna hurt bad. Should I give up college for good or deal with it and try better ? Im feeling really bad now :(.

If failing a math class messed up your life, then I don't even know what to say. :| Regardless giving up on college is only something you can figure out for yourself. College isn't meant for the vast majority of people so maybe it's not for you either. Don't let it get you too down. :)

Take another shot at it. Classes are easier the more times you take them. This time around though, get yourself a tutor or a study partner. Some subjects are just plain more difficult for some people than others. It doesn't mean you messed up your life, that you're a loser, stupid, etc. It just means that you weren't able to succeed with that particular subject this time around. But next time around, do whatever you can to do better. Think of college as a night club door guarded by a scary, jerk of a bouncer. (Algebra.) If you can get him to let you through, the hot babes and the nookie and lots of bliss await you within. But you need to get past the bouncer first.

Don't give up. It'd be pretty silly to give it all up over just a math class. Try harder next time and don't be afraid to ask for help. I can understand -- I'm pretty bad at math myself. Just don't give up. You'd regret it so much later.

this is only the beginning. You will have many more problems in your life that will be worse than failing math. Just try to deal with it the best you can and do your best to get back on track. You quit now, that just shows that you give up too easy and thats a path you dont want to take.

Drop maths. Terrible subject once they get rid of the numbers. I lost interest when the onus was placed upon remembering formulas. Learn your general arithmetic and you'll do fine in life.

$750 for out of state?! Jesus Christ, that's cheap. Definitely stay in college; get a bike and ride it there if you have to, but dropping out would be very bad.

Im in the same boat TC, sort of. I cant seem to get past the last math test that is done on the computer. Its always get some ridiculously long math question that the professor didnt cover. What I did was forget the math class while I take other classes. Ill leave that class as the last so I can only concentrate on it only, then hopefully ill do better.

lol this is funny I did the same thing I failed algebra in college twice! and I ended up having to take it a thrid time and barely past with a c- so just keep trying I still have 2 more maths to take to transfer to a university and I am horrible at math and scared I may fail my next two needed courses again but I just keep going and hoping I can do it and not mess up. sadly I can't drop it because I have no choice in taking it but I only have two more math courses to go so keep going, I hope you do the same and just move forward.

Unfortunately, no. College is our highest level of education (separated by undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate schooling), but every major requires certain requisites, regardless of whether or not they are actually relevant to the major. Math through college algebra (and often higher) is almost universal, regardless of the degree or program of study, as are English composition courses and basic sciences.

This leads to a convoluted flushing away of money on subjects we'll never use for a degree that has little to nothing to do with them.

you still have to take an exam before you enroll in college to see on what level you belong as far as math and english goes, unless you have the SAT scores which will be use for this.

That has absolutely nothing to do with our having the best schools in the world. If anything, it hampers us by bogging down students with required classes they should already know full well out of high school, wasting their money when they could and should be focusing on their program of study. Eliminating these requirements alone would probably increase the amount of students that stay in college and graduate with advanced skills in their fields.

I've already been educated in general. I don't need Maths or Science for what I want to do anymore and my English is good enough as it is because I have an A Level in English Language... as we don't go to university straight from high school.

yeah true I took what I needed to to graduate and graduated early and it didn't help me in college to be done earlier or keep it basic...god I kick myself...
