Well, I don't have much time left for decision regarding where I'm going...so I have a couple of question which I'd like to ask here. The reason why I'm doing this on Gamespot...it's probably because I trust people who have had first-hand experience with college life. (Please don't bs) --- Would you recommand a 2 year college...or a 4 year? If you had been in a 4 year...do you think that the first two years were a waste or helped you in some way? If you had been in a 2 year...did you like it?

I'm going to TCI - it's in manhattan. Here is my plan: Go to the 2-year college...graduate, and become a fireman(Yeah! and what of it!). Does anybody see any flaws? Oh...and the reason why I'd go to college and become a fireman is because I need some college credits to become one...and the college major is a back-up(maybe).

I also realize that most of you don't know what I'm talking about..as simple as it really is.

In my case...I think it's just a matter of preference. Since I'm planning on becoming a Fireman...a 2-year would probably best suit my needs. Like I said...I'm only going for the college credits and for a back-up.

got a 4 year degree.. it really depends on what you want to do. if you're sure you want to be a fireman, and a 2 year is sufficient, then go for it. but if you're unsure, it will always help you later on to have a 4 year degree under your belt.

Are you a minority?  I hear it helps to become a firefighter, but perhaps I have been misinformed.

I am in a Jr college now, so I don't know if my advice is what you'd be interested in.  If you want to become a FF, strive for a degree in fire science.  Supposedly it's a huge help and will put your name at the top of the heap.

I recommend you go down or call a local fire department and talk to them. They can tell you what some of them did to become a fireman. Alot of it depends on what you study. It would be easyer for you to become a emt/fireman if you study some type of medical course. But i suggest talking to someone in the field you want to go into.

the biggest plus for become a fireman, or any type of cop is having a veteran back ground whether its coast gaurd or military.

If you're sure being a fireman only requires a two year degree, then do that (just make sure what courses you need to take). If you think there's a good chance you'll want to do something else/your plans to become a fireman wont work out, go to a four year, since a bachlor's degree is needed for most jobs these days. Of course, depending on what back-up you have in mind, an associate's degree may still be sufficient. Alterantively you could do the associate's anyway, and if your plans dont work out, you can go to a four year college after that and get your bachlor's.

Go to this website:

http://www.theddt.com/sites/sicknickmondo/

Go to the boards and ask this question. This man, yes, you may call him stupid for getting slammed of 30 feet into concrete, but he has been to collage and answers EVERY question. He has been to collage, so make your way to the message boards (it's no popular site so your question WILL be answered) then ask your question. In a few days, you'll get your answer.
Simply put:

Go here:

http://www.theddt.com/sites/sicknickmondo/
Post on the message board about your collage stuff, he will answer it and then you leave ^.^
The site was JUST made a few days ago so their are almost no posts, so your question will get answered ASAP.

EDIT:
Yes their are some posts (about 40), but you WILL get your question answered. Get some advice from a man that knows every kind of pain, and has been to collage.

It depends on what career you wish to pursue.  Many careers demand a 4 year college education as a starting point.  It's tought to get your foot in the door without one.  However, most colleges really don't offer vocational training per se, they just provide higher education and skillsets so that you can learn job skills once you take that job.

I'm not certain about 2 year colleges.  I just don't know that much about them.

I recommended the least expensive way possible. If a two year is enough for the requirements of what you want to do then go that way. At a later date means after you've been working as as a fireman. If you discover during school that you want to change you can easily do that and it won't hurt you too much in the money department. There is student aid available to you as well.

Maybe I should restudy my "plan". I was going to get a degree in Digital Media Arts...but if that would mean that I won't be able to become a Fireman, there is no point.

I will do as you say, maybe I'll have as much luck as here :). I'm in all your debts fellow OT posters. Btw...the reason why I don't want to go to a 4-year college is fairly simple...I'm lazy, I see no point in retaking everything you took in high school but 100x harder. Why not just go straight to your major..but that's just my mentality.

Its not something you should choose just as a back up. College can be really expensive, so if you plan on being a fire fighter you should just go through a 2 year program. But, choose a school that you can transfer earned credits if you want to go to a four year after that. A lot of people earn an associates degree, work a couple years then go back for a bachelors.

The approach I would take for almost any college is to go to a Junior College (2 year) first, and get all of your general education credits out of the way there.  It saves you from spending several thousand dollars a semester at a more famous school just so you don't have to live with your parents.  The teachers at community colleges are generally more helpful as well, there are a lot fewer foreign TAs who have almost unintelligible accents (a huge problem at quite a few universities).  Anyways, since you're only planning to go for two years and be a fireman, you're doing the right thing.  While you're at it, you could set it up so the courses you take end up in EMT certification, if you ever feel like going back.

The only drawback to going to a Junior College is that it is often quite difficult to transfer into a 4-year university that isn't connected to said Junior College by a degree program.  And you have to keep living with your parents or afford your own apartment for two years (which shouldn't be that difficult).  But the flexibility it offers at about 10% of the cost of a major university is a good thing to have.

That helped me a lot...I will be reconsidering my whole approach. Also...I know that I began thinking about college a little late...but it's better than nothing. Thanks for your intelligent post.

It's not hard getting IN...it's just complicated...the whole thing. I can chose from numerous kinds of colleges....but some are too expensive and some are too demanding. I'm not exactly an A+ student...nothing close actually.

Maybe that it then. I wasn't the sharpest tool in the box when i was at school, thankfully thats all changed now (a lot of you probably won't agree with that) but that still didn't effect me getting into College at all. It would have kept me from advancing through college had i not done something about it.

Didnt think you were a senior becasue it seems a bit late to be worrying about this, usually you know this when applying, and i thought most colleges have stopped accepting by now, unless its rolling admission.

Glad to be of assistance.

I went to Virginia Tech for one year. Decided I shouldn't pay that much for the resources I was given, and skipped the last two months of school. Now I'm at a junior college, and I'm transferring to a university as part of a degree program. The social aspect of almost any four-year university is great, but the academics aren't. Many ****s are taught by foreign-born TAs whose grasp of the English language is difficult to understand. The entire online aspect is pretty much the same at my junior college as it was at VT. The teachers here have more time to help students, even though most of them also hold other jobs.

At VT, it seemed like the focus for all of my classes was quantity instead of quality. For general education credits, this is BAD. It's much better to learn at a slower rate and grasp the concepts fully than to learn faster but only get enough to pass the tests and forget it once you're out of school. Which is why I think it's better to go to a junior college for gen. ed. credits first. I know not all colleges are the same as VT, but after frequenting a few social websites, it's apparent that that is the case for a large portion of them.
