So I'm currently 30 years old. I've been using tobacco producs since I was 15/16 and smoking since I was 18. I know it's stupid but it's my only vice. I don't drink alcohol, I don't use drugs etc. So after numerous attempts I've finally quit. It's been almost 24 hours and I can't beleive how much the withdrawal sucks. So far, I've been pissed, agitated, angry, hot cold, anxious, annoyed, etc.

I'm using nicotine gum to help with the worst of the cravings, but I've only had around 3 pieces. Sadtly I work with addictions and know all the info to quit, I'm just sturggling on taking my own advice. So, has anyone else overcome an additiction and can relate?

First time trying to quit? It took me a few times. The nicotine is out of your body by a week or so, I believe, so just hang in there.

Tell people you're quitting, it helped me to stick to it, cause people will ask how it's going. Good luck! It's very rewarding.

I've never had an addiction to tobacco, but I've known plenty of friends who have quit. Those first couple of days were extremely tough. All I can tell you is just to hang in there, but I'm sure you know that already.

Maybe you could find something to do tonight to keep yourself busy. If you have a wife or kids you could go to a movie, dinner, etc. Just to keep yourself occupied, you know? So you're not just sitting on your computer craving.

I've been trying not to tell others that I'm quitting so if I relapse I don't disappoint them. But I can see how that's setting myself up for failure. I'll take your suggestion and tell those closest to me.

I don't know what kind you might enjoy, but I started exercising. It helps you to be in tune with your body, and you can see yourself improving quickly. I started running, for example, and now I'm on an ice hockey team! Couldn't have kept up with the other guys when I still smoked.

I quit smoking when I got pneumonia and after like 3 days of not smoking tried having a cigarette :|

It was awful

You need to pick up another "vice" that isn't dangerous like chewing on a toothpick or something.

lol, actually ice hockey is what got me started with tobacco in the first place because I'd chew on the ice to keep my mouth moist (looking back it was stupid, I know). But I've been trying to be more active, especially since I'll likely use food to fill the void that cigarettes leave, at least for awhile.

JUST keep your self occupied!!! STAY out of the house! Take a car ride, go chill at the park, go to the mall, go eat some where, hang out with friends that dont smoke, visit family members. Try not to play any video games, watch TV, or go on the internet.

I was thinking carrots or sunflower seeds. So far even after the nicotine is gone in the gum, at least it satisfies my need to do something.

Well I have smoked for two years now. And recently, I've been fortunate enough to find cigarrettes disgusting. I can't touch them or smell them because I feel like I want to throw up. So basically my body has quit smoking, because it can't, and I don't feel bad at all. No withdrawal, no mood swings, anything.

im a fellow smoker so i can completely relate, i'm 28 and have been smoking since i was 15. I've known a couple people that quit really easily with Chantix, so i suggest trying that if its really that important to you (if you're trying to quit cold turkey and going through that miserable hell then im sure it is that important) i've been considering quitting too and i know if/when i do thats the route i'll go.

all i can say besides that is good luck and don't let phillip morris win. just as an fyi the nicotine is out of your body in 2-4 days. everything after that is mental

Actually I'm okay in the house, on the internet, playing video games, etc. I have a 5 year old daughter so my wife and I have NEVER smoked in the house, car, etc. We figured OUR stupid choice to smoke shouldn't expose her to second hand smoke.

I've looked into Chantix, but I couldn't afford it as I don't have health insurance. I'm hoping the hell I'm going through now will keep me from picking it back up. I wish I knew then what I know now about smoking.

Quitting outright is supposed to be pretty tough. I hear it's better to slowly reduce the amount you smoke so that the final step isn't as big.

I've tried that numerous times, but I was never able to actually reduce my use for mor ethan a day or two. Sooner or later I was always back up to a pack a day. For me at least it's all or none.

I'm 30 and I quit a little over a year ago, and I started around the same time as you. I'm not trying to discourage you because quiting smoking is the only way to go (you konw it and I know it), but after a year it still sucks. The only thing that worked(s) for me was thinking about the rich **** who I gave so so much money to. I did not like being their slave and now that I'm free I feel like I'm on the right side of the battle. So I guess I'm saying if you can demonize the smokes than it is a little easier, but beyond that it is just reaping what you sowed. Good luck it is much better without having to buy and smoke cigs, it just take time.

I thought the same thing until I tried to stop. The only way to stop smoking is to not smoke. Sounds stupid but it is true, you can't ween off of cigs, you have to just stop no turning back ever or else you start smoking again.

Yah on my high school team this past season, about 90 percent of the players chewed tobacoo, as well as drank, and smoked pot. Pretty disgusting habit though, cause they would just spit on the locker room floor.

Im 18 right now, just graduated highschool, and I can only think of one person I know (Not friend, anybody I can think of) that doesnt smoke, and I know a lot of people. at least 70% of my graduating class smokes. I think it is disgusting and wonder why anybody does it, I find it really easy to say no. My brother smokes, I can't count how many times he's quit, but he's always back to smoking. My grandfather died from lung cancer due to smoking, my uncle died from the same reason not long ago, and my brother always coughs up tar, and has coughing fits, it scares me cause he sounds like he's gonna die.

So heres to you quitting smoking, because it is seriously a dirty habit and I look down upon people who do smoke, but I always find it to be noble when people realize that it is a disgusting habit and actually try to do something about it.

I'm a smoker and I have no idea how to quit smoking, but I'd like to sooooo much. So many thing make me mad about smoking; weight loss, money problems, self-righteous non-smokers belittling you. I could go on forever. It's so hard to kind of fill that void when you stop because you have so much spare time when you quit smoking that its hard to improvise with something else. Anyway, best of luck to you

I have pulled myself off of drugs and alcohol several times.

The best advice I can give is to keep yourself as busy and occupied as possible. It is tough because you are gonna be sick and tired part of the time. But stay occupied until the worst is over!! Otherwise you are going to lay around and obsess over it. IF you have the mental fortitude, that mental obsession is worse than the physical withdrawals and you will suffer. If you don't have the strong will power then you will slip back.

So keep yourself so occupied you don't have time to think about it. Plus, it will help you sleep at night.......that's when the demons come out.....

I know, my wife and I both smoke, like you said in an earlier post, we don't smoke around our kids so we go outside, but I built an office in the garage, where our pc's are and now it's our adult smokehole. I don't even want to try to figure out how much I've spent, on that Chantix, our Dr prescribed us that, but no insurance covers it according to our pharmacy, and it's cheaper than a months worth of cigarettes, just trying to ease off first. Dexter, love it, been watching season 2 to get ready, starts in September!

[QUOTE="btaylor2404"]I'm sorta in the same boat, 33, no other vices and have smoked since 15. You already know all there is to know, you've made it a day, best of luck and keep trying! Freaking stupidest thing I've ever done is start smoking.btaylor2404

Yeah, it is stupid. I once figured out all the money I've spent on cigarettes to be around $10,000. I almost cried. On an unrelated note, I can't wait for the new season of Dexter to start. My wife and I acutlaly ordered Showtime just for Dexter. Can't wait!!!

I'm serious guys, don't ease off it will never work, you either smoke or you don't. The many times I tried to quit "ease off, or gradually stop" were my favorite words, because it meant I could keep smoking. The only way to stop, is to stop. If you need help use gum (Which the TC said he was) or some sort of replacement, or whatever you need to use so you don't light up. It sucks big time and smoking it the single worst decision I've made in my life, but you can only stop by not smoking. People who don't smoke or have never tried to quit (I mean really try) can't quite grasp that if you have one puff, you will be smoking within days or hours. Again to the TC you can do it, and you will be healthier and happier when it is all over, good luck.

Good luck, old habits die hard. Hopefully you can pull through. Just know that everyone here is hoping you can beat the addiction.

Exactly. I've already told myself that several times. If I could just buy "one more pack" I could quit the right way and "taper off". Like you said though, that just means I can keep smoking a while longer.

I just can't beleive what a large part of my life that smoking was, and how much time I spent doing it.
