So, I just saw this movie last night, and I thought I would reveiw it.
Plot: Well, the actual plot itself is sort of typical. Couple moves into house, weird stuff starts happening. Now, alot of weird crap happens in this movie, so you might think that the couple would just move out. Well, that would actually be usless, because it turns out a demon is haunting Micah and Katie and it follows Katie wherever she goes. This is more of a vehicle for the excellent atmosphere.
Presentation:If there is one thing this movie succeeds at, it's scaring the pants off an audience. Seriously, there were people throughout the whole movie who were screaming and uttering expletives. Anyhow, this movie does a fantastic job of making you dread the next scene. It's shot in documentary style, like Blair Witch and Cloverfield (which, personally, I thought was great.) This causes a great many moments of suspense and terror. For instance, during one of the many sequences in which t a camera is put in Micah's and Katie's bedroom while they sleep, possesed Katie gets up, and stares at Micah for hours. Literally. (The time at the bottom of the screen is sped up.) Another scene I thought was fantastic was when the demon walks through talcolm powder on the ground and you see its footprints. They look like a mix between a chicken and a claw. Which leads to another great part of the movie. You never see the monster, and are left to your own devices to find out what it looks like, making it about ten times scarier than if it was actually shown. Most of the movie is like this, making you figure it out for yourself, and this makes a great horror movie. Most movies today rely on gore and a disturbing monster to convey fear. This one breaks that mold. Oh, yeah, there is a part near the end of the movie where Katie cuts her hand. In the Bible, it says that wounds open the way for demonic possesion. Just sayin'.
Scariness: If you have only seen slasher flicks and that's your experience with horror movies, this movie will shock you and leave you unable to sleep. If you're like me, and commonly read horror books, play horror games and see REAL horror movies, this movie will not be as scary, but you will still walk out of the movie theater scared and may have some trouble getting to sleep. But, once I actually fell asleep, I was fine.
Final thoughts: This is how you make a legitimatley scary movie. You don't rely on gore, or sex, or anything like that. You use good old fashioned suspense, and maybe not show the audience everything. Maybe if there are more movies like this in the genre, the genre will be revived like a phoenix. Although, the upcoming flick "Shutter Island" looks pretty good. In short, if you want a truly scary experience and not some gross, over the top slasher, SEE THIS MOVIE.
I hope this reveiw helps you make a desision about seeing this movie, and any feedback would be welcome.
