Hey everyone I know some may not care, but I recently discovered I may have symptoms of diabetes and I've had these symptoms for awhile now but haven't taken them seriously till now.

Symptons-

Some diabetes symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Increased fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Blurry vision

Yes I have scheduled an apointment with my doctor to find out for sure.

Anyways does anyone else have Diabetes or know someone with it?! Please share with me Thanks.

At one point, I thought I had it, too. But I think the internet can tend to make a person paranoid, and that this may be what's going on with you. You should of course have this checked out by a doctor, but from what I understand from what I read, if you really had diabetes, there would be no missing it, primarily on account of the excessive thirst. I read stories from people who found out they had diabetes, and almost unanimously, they would talk about drinking 4 litres of liquid and still feeling thirsty. They'd talk about being thirsty even AS they were drinking. They developed a paranoia of not having a full bottle of water with them if they were out of the house for more than half an hour. They knew where every public restroom in their city was, because they had to urinate every half hour or so. And of course, their urine had a very strong sweet scent because of the sugar content.

So although it is POSSIBLE that you have diabetes, I wouldn't get worked up until you have a diagnosis. It's easy to convince yourself you have symptoms that you don't REALLY have when you're worried about something. And that's how I convinced myself I was diabetic. Turns out it was all in my head.

Cancer's another good one for that. Again, good to be cautious... but it's easy to misinterpret things as being cancer symptoms because of the way they're described and the fear the illness can bring about in a person.

You are most likely fine. EVERYBODY has at least one symptom from almost every disease in the books, including diabetes. As posted before the two big things to look for the excessive weight LOSS and intense thirst. If you constantly have to be pounding down water at all times as you are always thirsty then there might be a problem.

I think this is 100% correct. I took one look at those symptoms and thought "NO! i totally have diabetes!" In actual fact i felt fatigued most likely because i was tired, or i felt thirst because i just hadnt had a drink in a while. But your mind tends to jump to the more dramatic option of "Crap! I must be sick!"

What symptoms are you having specifically? How old are you?

Type 1 DM tends to present with sudden weight loss or full blown Diabetic Ketoacidosis, which is life threatening. It also requires life-long insulin. If you suspect you have it you need to see your physician ASAP.

And no, this is nothing like the Type 2 DM your parents have, which is associated with obesity and which can be treated with oral hypoglycemics. Type 1 is autoimmune.

Diet doesn't help so much with Type 1, which is what I'm assuming this kid would have unless he has a rare case of early onset type 2, which I doubt he would have unless he is extremely obese. In type 1 the pancreatic beta cells which secrete insulin are destroyed, so he would require insulin. With the advent of insulin pumps, this isn't quite as awful as it might sound.

Type 2, which involves insulin resistance, and which occurs more in adults, may improve with diet, although most physicians will also start metformin. To make things more confusing, Type 2 may require insulin in its later stages after the pancreas is "burned out" from secreting too much insulin to compensate for the resistance at the cellular level. Some physicians will try to delay this as long as possible with agents like actos and avandia, while others are advocates for starting insulin early if tight glycemic control cannot be achieved.

Yeah, pretty much. Fat people with crappy diets with a family history of type 2 are likely to get it.

Type 1 really can't be helped though. It's an autoimmune condition like Lupus or MS. For whatever reason, your body decided to start attacking itself.

i've neverheard of people getting pancreas transplants as a result of diabetes. he would need to monitor his blood sugar and take insulin to control it.

I don't think it is seen as a priority operation, or maybe there are other reasons for diabetes.

The same autoimmune processes which destroyed the first pancreas would destroy the new one as well. It's also extremely dangerous to do much of anything to the pancreas surgically. The enzymes it contains are devastating if released.

Well I am no medical expert but.... take a bucket of steroids and a couple of adrenaline shots - should sort a persons immune system out for a few days. Nobody try that though...
