So I have been hearing a lot of people talking about paranormal activity 3 and what not. I wasnt feeling all of the hype when the first one came out and when the 3rd came out everyone was going to see it and talking about it being scary, so i logged into netflix and started to watch the first paranormal activity, nothing really happened the first hour of the movie heck i dont think i saw any action until the last 10 minutes, lets just say i was highly disappointed in it and it was not even scary, I did more laughing then anything. So i want to know if i am the only one who thought that movie was not even remotely scary and if the other 2 are even scary at all?

"Suspension of disbelief" is important for most "shaky cam" type movies.

It wasn't a "scary" movie. Like Insidious are something like that. It was more creepy than scary.

Watch The Haunting, 1963 version, and you'll note that it is also a slow going movie. But instead of having shocks and scares every few seconds and showing the big bad of the piece early on, The Haunting 1963 version keeps you in suspense all the way through. From what I've heard of the Paranormal Activity movies, they try to do the same thing. They try to keep the viewer in suspense instead of using fancy CGI and cheap scares like most horror movies do these days, keeping the viewer in suspense can lead to the person becoming very scared because nothing is happening and then just when they begin to feel the most scared, that's when something happens. A good scare doesn't come from something leaping out at you and continuing to do that all the time, a good scare comes from your emotions and nerves being toyed with to the point where all it takes is one, good, sudden shock and you're left feeling very terrified. It's psychological horror, not pop out horror. I've still to see these Paranormal Activity movies and I'm curious about them, I know to approach them with no expectations of cheap scares every few seconds, but to expect nothing at all. Hopefully it will be give me a nice scare instead of boring me to death with annoying CGI and tacky scare tactics every few seconds.

That wasn't even what I was talking about, but now that you mention it, that would be hella badass. I was just saying some people expect it to be a regular movie. Then, when they see it's a home movie set up, they get bored of it quickly and end up dismissing it entirely.

Paranormal Activity and movies like it were not suppose to be jump out scary but creepy in the sense of imagining if it happened to you.. In that being alittle tense or spooked when your by your self at your home or other such things.. Outside of that, they were never really meant to be jump out scary imo.

It is scary if you've got anything even remotely resembling an imagination. Sadly, since the release of the first one it's become plainly obvious that not many people do.

They are so dumb imo. I hadn't seen one until PA3 and my friends invited me to the theater to watch it. I thought it was unrealistic and sooooooo cheesy that I couldn't help but to laugh at it. When me and my friends stood up to leave I thought we were going to talk about how dumb it was, but they were like, "that was really scary, best out of the three," and I honestly didn't know how to respond to that because the movie was soooo bad.

The intention of the movie is to be scary, but it isn't. You can watch with a straight face and not feel any emotion for it.

It's your loss if you don't find it scary. Don't see why people brag about how they didn't find XX scary, just means the person that found it scary gained a better experience and you wasted your time.

I wouldn't even call it creepy. I'd call it tame, but boring sounds better because nothing really happens in the movie.

See this is what I mean by people watch it "wrong." If you took out a video camera and started video taping random crap in your house nothing would happen either. It's a home movie; it's meant to be portrayed in a realistic fashion. How is that even remotely difficult to understand?

atmosphere is everything in watching a scary movie, I have a big screen TV, surround sound, I watch scary movies late at night with the lights off, no distractions, they're more enjoyable that way, some people watch things with their friends and talk the whole time that's probably a good way to not watch something, or on a crappy TV with the sound down low, lights on, you really have to go all out to enjoy something I went to watch Insidious with my sister, I really liked it, tense enough but not outright freaky, my sister was terrified the entire first half but then she got on her blackberry and texted the last half then walked out like "that sucked", so yeah people have to take responsibility in enjoying stuff, the movie can only go so far part of the excitement of watching movies like the Paranormal Activity movies is watching them with an engaged audience, there's that contagious emotion that fuels my individual enjoyment and sense of terror, and a decent movie theater to pick up on subtle cues like odd noises and movements that people not giving their undivided attention will miss plus the movie theater can make a big difference, when I first went to see PA3 the theater had excellent sound which really heightened the experience when strange noises around the house caused the tension to rise, or that low bass sound that'd emanate when strange things happened, I went to see Paranormal Activity 3 a second time at a crappy theater and all those subtle cues were missing, it really ruined the experience there's a lot of factors to take into account when trying to enjoy a movie, try being aware of them to make the most of it

Yea they wanted to much of that after 1. part 1 was ok even though the end was a bit much it still was fine. Part 2 on the other hand went overbord. They want you to beleive that this is real people and not just victums in a slasher flick which lets be honest most are brain dead and do dumb things, but part 2 does that with a character and you say to yourself "noone can be this stupid" and the end was crap in 2 and then uncessary backstory made it looks even more dumb to no end. Im not going to bother to see 3 since I heard what the end was and its even stupider then 2 if thats even possible.

I actually giggled a few times during the trailer I saw, then again, I do that with all movies that do not include mystery or mythology.

Yeah the JP grudge movies are more scarier and better then the remake series, through the first of that series was still decent. The 2nd movie was just crap howeverand didn't bother seeing the third.

Why do people find those foreign films like the grudge or ring scary ??? A dark blue scenery with a body thats twitches in a weird fashion isn't scary. On topic. I didn't find them scary either. After seeing the theaters of people jumping and screaming I thought for sure it would scare me but didn't. Also to people who say they're aren't any scary movies (jeepers creepers is decent , The Strangers is great too (one of the only movies in the past 10 years or so to make me kind of lock my door and turn the lights on)) So they are there you just gotta find them.
