I'm not exactly super close with any of my family members in my house and I know they sometimes snoop around in my room. I haven't had a desktop computer in ages and I'm planning on getting one soon. Is there an easy way to keep them from turning on my computer and or see what's on there? Even with a password at the startup screen or whatever they could google how to bypass that so I need a sure way to stop them from accessing my future computer.

You could unplug the hdd from your mobo every time you leave your room. Make your folders hidden. Add passwords on every folder. Hide important things deep in your folders.

If I keep on unplugging and replugging the hdd wouldn't that screw it up? i heard something about that a while ago. Also couldn't they just google instructions on how to bypass passwords and how to find hidden folders? Damn I realize I'm paranoid as hell.

Well then what exactly do you want us to suggest? I could say buy a lock, and you could say they could google how to pick locks, i could say put your pc in a safe, you could say they could google how to crack safes. A password will be fine unless they pick up the art of computer programming and hacking. The only way i can think of off the top of my head without doing any research would be to download linux on a usb and boot from linux to access the folders as i don't think it asks for your windows password.

Solid snake by name solid snake by nature it would seem :)

A windows password would do, if they are good enough to hack that then they can get around whatever security you put in place.

You're making it sound like your family members are your enemies, man. :P Well, if you're really that paranoid about this situation, get a laptop instead, and bring it with you everywhere you go.

Actually i guess there is easily found window password hacks that use rainbow tables. Just make your password very good and they won't bother waiting around for hours while it decodes. Something like 25 letters and numbers but very easy to type. qwe789asd456zxc132qwe789asd456zxc123 something like that.

Get yourself your own place to live...... Otherwise a password should be more than enough to deter unwanted access.

It's true that they could learn how to find hidden folders.....but they first have to LOCATE the hidden folder, right? You could always lock away a winrar archive somewhere...

In that case, you have no choice but to deal with the risk that your family members will try to poke around your computer, even though I highly doubt they will be able to get past even the basic password protection on Windows user accounts.

lol I never thought someone would have this type of problem. Where there family is going to go so far as to try to hack your password and find out whats on your computer. That's pretty funny. I'm sure you'll figure something out. Theres gotta be ways to do this.

When I was a little kid my parents told me not to play around with the VCR because they had installed a shock chip on it, and if I hit the wrong button I'd get a nasty shock. I believed it until I was 17. Try that

If the TC's family members actually believe this, I hardly think he needs to be so paranoid about the situation anyway.

Tell your family it is your desktop (assuming you are paying for it) and tell them to GTFO of your private stuff. I would have very strained relations with my family if they didn't respect my privacy like that.

If you want 100% privacy then don't get a computer to begin with ;). If you insist upon having a computer then I would recommend a portable SSD for the privacy and speed bonus over an HDD considering it will be running from a usb port which will slow it down considerably. I would like to point out though that a portable SSD doesn't last as long as a portable HDD. Like another user mentioned, you could setup a boot password. You could store all your information on a flash drive and just deleted browsing history and the like when you log off (I believe you can set it up to automatically do this). If you want even more security you could get a program to wipe the free space on the memory device from time to time. I would recommend the boot password, a user account password, a portable SSD, and wiping free space/deleting browser data when you're done (this is just my own recommendation based upon what I use. ;) ) Oh I would also like to point out that if your family is truly this nosy then you should mention to them that hacking is illegal. ;)

To be totally secure you would need your own network since they could just Google how to use Wireshark and watch all your Internet traffic

alright i have a good solution for you tc and unless your family is super tech savy then theyll never be able to figure this way out, when you get your desktop buy a secondary external usb hard drive, install windows on both hard drives and when your not home change the boot order of the hard drives for your computer so that it boots from the internal hard drive instead of from the first and when you want to use it plug in your usb hard drive and change the boot order so that it boots from the external hard drive, dont worry about messing up the external hard drive, they are meant to be plugged in and unplugged multiple times, problem solved

If your family is that terrible that they're willing to do whatever to bypass the lock, then it might be easier to just like, get a new family or move out or get emancipated. Jeez, you make them sound like jerks who can't stand privacy.

Operant conditioning. Attach a small electrical shocker to your doorknob and hook it up to a switch so you can turn it on when you leave.

use winrar for all your files and put passwords on them. You can also make all your files hidden. Make it so your browser deletes all info when you close it.
