So, this is the deal: I want to be a video game designer, but I dont know what I should study in unniversity or in what areas I have to stand out. What I want to do specifically is, to design how the gameplay should be and what the environment should look like. Something along the lines of environment artist or gameplay design. (sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology)

What I want is some advice from someone with experience in the area, And I assume the gamespot/gamefaqs community could help me :)

why not just go to some university database that has all universities and all prorams they offer and it should detail what you need to get in and what you would have to take if accepted? Maybe they do not have a site like that where you are from but they do in my area

Yeah, right on about making a company. We could outsell Nintendo and make some kick-ass consoles. We would rock the industry ;).

Well ill try to figure it out around my area, but that would be hard for in the country im in, Video game designing gets you nowhere. Although Im planning on studying outside of this place.

Well if you want to be an evironment artist then surely you need to take some drawing classes with both paper and with a computer, math is essential aswell I would assume.

Well, I wouldn't want to do anything with drawing, I Am a horrible artist. But i'm sure creating a game isn't all about drawing. Anyway, we would make the Playbox 363 :) lol.

I HIGHLY recommend you attempt to do some sort of modding first before jumping into video game design, to see if you actually want to do what you say you do. Many people say they want to do it, but most of them find that it's not for them afterwards.

You should take some courses in C++, Java, and other forms of code.

I've worked with some mod teams before. Each team i've been used a different code and engine. The first of which was XNA. lol.

Nooooo. That's one of the last things you need to learn (and then master).

You need to build up fundamentals first

Build up your portfolio with lots of still life pieces and figure drawing. Then a few personal projects on the side.

I was told that before, but also being busy with actual school, and then wanting spare time.. But I'll take some courses in it whenever I can. I'll proably start in c++

I also know that making private servers for games is a good thing for begginer coders, as you may say its illegal... It's not illegal unless making a profit. But, if anybdoy wants to give me details on what it really is, is it a good pay after I start mastering coding? Is it a bad career choice? what is your opinions.

Get a degree in computer science. Then you might have a chance at becoming a menial code-writer on a big team.

You can't just "choose" to become a video game designer. You have to start at the bottom of the ladder and work your way up. And there is no guarantee you'll ever be capable of getting your own team and "designing" your own games. Unless you want to be an indie developer and make flash games.

Uhmmm... Ok, I suck at drawing. I believe I'm pretty good at math though. Would that mean I'm better off as a coder?

and In what language are games like "the legend of zelda twillight princess" or "halo 3" made?

Modding is a much better route to take because people from the game industry will recognize it as a portfolio piece. A server won't be acceptable....unless there's something about it that completely blows them away.

When you find a good company to work with, they will pay you well. They're not just paying you to work, they're paying you to do your finest work.

Well, as I know you can't just choose, But it has been a fantasy for a long time to be a video game designer, I have plenty of great ideas. What do you suggest though, making your own company? joining microsoft? And how is the pay? I gues it depends on how good your game is? What would you say the average is? But, I would love to learn how to do it all and work my way up.

So you suggest me taking java, c++ courses etc, and then focus on modding? Do you suggest learning from online courses, or going to an actual place to learn how to do it.

Lemme see if I get this straight. The first thing I would have to do is learn a proggraming language. (C, C++, Java etc.) and afterwards start modding games?

Learn to program. Make your own game. Start simple.

Personally, I gave up. I hate math (as it's basically learning some kind of algebra/language)

It's also frustrating, as to even make a game as simple as Pacman requires pages of complex code.

Modding involves using code language in game engines--they aren't entirely seperate things. I recommend taking some courses at a college so you can get used to working with other people.

Yeah. Pretty much. It would be unwise to just jump into modding without knowing how to work with whatever engine you're given.

C++ is the basic programming language for basically everything these days. Game engines use different techniques to achieve similar results, but they are all built on the same structure.

So i'm right about basically its a mix of learning a different language and algebra.

Are you in high school or college at the moment?
