I have plenty of free time to dedicate to it. I usually don't do anything when I'm not in school on weekdays, only the weekends. I'll be able to work on it a couple of hours a day when I'm done with school work and other stuff. I'm not exactly sure what I should be doing first though. I've obviously never written a book before so I'm now where to begin. Can anyone help me out? Give me some ideas on things to do, or just any help in general would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you know what you want to write? If so then you've already started. Write that, put it away for a couple of weeks, read what you wrote and revise it (you WILL need to revise it, unless you're the reincarnation of Frank Herbert).

Just open up the word processor and do it. You can have fifty thousand words in thirty days if you write about 1,700 words a day (fifty thousand words is roughly the length of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy).

If you want some websites for references or whatnot then I have a ton bookmarked, but really, you don't need anything else until you get to the revising process. Still, if you want them, PM me and I'll get back to you tomorrow; I'm going to bed now.

Remember, "Nothing good is ever written, only rewritten".

So go into your first draft thinking this, and don't get the idea that your first draft has to be perfect. That will just cause unnecessary stress.

Also writing a general (can, and will likely change) list of scenes (events) in order can help.

Im on the same road as you. To start, I picked up a small writing pad in which I write all my ideas, as well as a journal. Ive been reading how-to books and novels in the same genre I want to write in. Ive written a couple of drafts of the first chapter, but Im not happy with it yet. It still needs re-working. The problem with me is, although Ive always loved writing, im not very big on reading. So ive just been focused on reading as much as I can lately.

Make sure to do your research before you begin. First off, there is a standard format. If you do not do this and you try to query a literary agent, you will look like you did not do your homework and you will be rejected most likely instantly.

Here is what you need to do:

First off, go into a word processor (If you have Microsoft Word 2007, you will want to turn off Widow/Orphan Control option, change smart quotes to straight quotes, and uncheck double hyphen "--" to a dash option. There are others as well, which I will get to in a moment. Now, if you're using Open Office Writer, you will want to create a template, which this tutorial will help you) and format your manuscript. This is essential! I advise to do this now rather than later. It will save a lot of trouble in the end.

Your standard fonts are Times New Roman and Courier New (Courier is just fine, as well). I advise to use Times New Roman. Make sure your font is 12 point font. Once you are done with that, go to Home --> Paragraph. Click on the little box that has an arrow going up and an arrow going down. It looks something like this:

^ ---
| ---
v ---

Once you have clicked on that, click on 2.0. This will give you double-spaced. Your manuscript should be double-spaced AT ALL TIME. Then, click on that same box again and click on Remove Space Before Paragraph or Remove Space After Paragraph (whichever one says "Remove". Both may say it, so click both, but if one just says it, then just click on the one). This will get rid of the annoying blank space that is between paragraphs.

*When you break for a scene, just hit enter twice. This will indicate that a new scene has started. For chapters, you will want to do a page break, or hit ctrl + enter.

Now that that is done, you will want to work on the Widow/Orphan Control that I mentioned.

For the widow/orphan control, go to Page Layout --> Paragraphs --> Line and Page Breaks. Uncheck the Widow/Orphan Control and it should turn it off. Once you're done, hit okay.

NOTE: Home --> Paragraph takes you to the same place.

To change smart quotes to straight quotes, it's a bit of a walk. Go to Word Options --> Proofing --> AutoCorrect Options --> AutoFormat As You Type. Uncheck straight quotes with smart quotes. Do the same thing for hyphens "--" with dashes, and then hit okay.

For the rest, the alignment should be left justified (meaning the right is jagged). Do NOT justify your manuscript. It's a big no-no. The only thing that should be centered are your chapters. These are some of the requirements when it comes to writing a novel. You must format it to this standard. Furthermore, make sure you have a snugline in the header.

(Snugline is something like this: "Springborn/Ashes, Ashes/1" A snugline has your last name, book title, and page number. This will help a literary agent or editor or publisher find your work if it gets misplaced in the slush pile or ends up getting shuffled into someone else's manuscript.)

And finally, make sure the margins are 1" all the way around! That tutorial I linked gives an explanation on how to make a template for it for Open Office Writer.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about formatting or anything in general when it comes to writing a novel, please pm me. :) I've written two novels so far and have outline two others. I am working on rewriting the first (and will be rewriting the second).

Write about a subject you enjoy, and your passion should bleed through into your work. Good characters will live inside of your head, and you will find that once you've created them, they will in turn right the story for you. In the end, good literature is difined by the human element, and if you can capture that emotion, then I will be first in line to read whatever you write.

tl;dr version: Fall in love with your characters, because if you don't, your readers certainly wont.

Well the first thing you want to do is make a thread on a gaming forum. Then you're going to need to take advice from anonymous people who very likely have no idea what they're talking about.

he doesn't just need advice... I mean, the majority of us aren't authors. but we can still inspire him, provide some motivation.

I've done a lot of research and know a thing or two about writing a book. I've written two of them so far, working on a third and fourth. I'm also looking up literary agents and gathering a list to query.

Just write. Its as simple as that. Write until your fingers fall off. Dont stick to a topic or genre, just write and write and write. When you cant write anymore, step back and read it all.. figure a genre out, figure a story out based on what youve written. Throw it all into some semblence of order. Then write again till you can write no more. And revise and repeat until you have a clear story. It could take you months, or even years just to get it all down. But once you start, dont stop.. even the most mundane things you write down, will have merit on the finished work. You will find your way amidst the complete and utter chaos of the things you have written, and eventually find your main character and supporting cast.

Then take the sarcasm from people who post in a forum that arent willing to help you, only to see their written word or their voice heard. You know, politicians.

And your point being? It's called a logline, yes, therefore I posted it on my blog. :) It is a dark paranormal romance, after all.

Anything else?

The person said he's writing a book. It has nothing to do with me, therefore my books have nothing to do with this thread, in which case what you have quoted has nothing to do with it.

And since you only quoted it without adding anything, I'm going to delete it. There's no reason it should be posted here unless it has to do with me. This thread is about the TC and him asking for help.

I've thinking about starting writing myself. I got into the swing of things with my creative pieces for my English A-level coursework, but now I'd like to write something that's completely my own. Not a novel or anything like that, but maybe some short stories.

Thanks to everyone who helped, and ayanami_rei thanks alot for the tips on the word processor. I will be using Open Office since I don't have the full version of word on my computer, only a trial. I really enjoy reading Anthony Horowitz' "Alex Rider" series. So can anyone who has read some of the books in the series recommend some similar ones? Thanks again guys/girls.
