I'm a guitarist (Not an electric guitarist), but I listen to piano and other keyboards like the Organ and I wish it were more popular today:

It's undeniable that piano and organ were amazing in Clássical music, but I think it's amazing in other genres, too. Most Jazz fans love piano in Jazz. And although the Hammond B3 Organ was popular in Rock, the electric guitar was far more popular, although I found the Hammond and keyboard sounded just as good, with artists like Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman.

To me, I like the electric guitar (although it is, yes I will say the overused word, overrated), but piano and other keyboards should be getting much more attention than they currently are. The main focus is on guitar solos. And to be honest, guitar solos in Rock music get very repititous in my opinion.

Anyone else want more keyboard music?

Also, the word, C|assical is censored by Gamespot (another glitch)

I started learning the piano a month ago, and must have watched that kempff video like a hundred times. I wish I could play that, but right now it seems damn near impossible to. Also sight reading is like trying to learn to read all over again, it's so difficult. Patience is a virtue I hope.

I'm into hard rock and metal and I love whenever a band uses pianos or violins in their songs. If your into metal/industrial-ish music, you should check out Nine Inch Nails.

Heh, sight reading is difficult for me. Classical guitarists are generally the WOSRT sightreaders on the planet. I am no exception. I've memorized so many pieces, yet I'm a horrible sightreader.

I've been playing piano since I was little, starting out on Classical. I now play keyboard as well, ranging styles from Jazz and Progressive music. I adore Keith Emerson but I'd say Jordan Rudess is my real hero of the instrument.

My sister has showed me so much of their music...not a fan. I find that piano/keyboard is very good in Rock (just as good as electric guitar), but I personally enjoy it slightly more in Jazz. Just my preference, though...

I'm not a fan of piano, but things like synthesizers and keyboards are very good in music. I love the electric guitar, I think it's the most amazing instrument next to the violin (which I also hate, but respect as the greatest musical instrument made imo)

If you're a fan of Jazz piano, definitely check into Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, and Lennie Tristano. Great musicians.

Keyboards, no. Pianos, yes. I love the classical genre, andalthough I'm more interested in Baroque and Gregorian Chants (I'm not sure if that's considered classical), I've always had a great respect for pianists. I have no particular favorite, though. I find any decent pianist to be worth listening to just because it's a beautiful instrument.

I've never been a big fan of jazz, though. In fact, I've never been a fan at all.

It's interesting - the other day I was thinking about a similar topic. I was flipping through the channels and I came across an American show (I think) which was showing how various things were made. Anyways, they did a segment on the recorder and featured a brief clip of a very talented man playing the instrument. It sounded fantastic; a highly under-appreciated instrument, in my opinion.

The bulk of the music I listen to (mostly sufjan stevens and regina spektor) has some kind of keyboard present. I'm not a crazy follower of the music industry, but get the impression that they're still pretty popular compared to any instrument that isn't a guitar.

I love Sufjan and especially Regina. Regina is easily one of my favorite artists around, I adore her style so very much.

I agree with much of what you said. Piano, like just about every other instrument that isn't produced by electricity, is at it's best in classical. Also, about Gregorian chants, the term "Classical is really used in two ways. The first is the VERY broad and open definition, referring music from after the fall of the Roman Empire, which starts the Medieval era, to the Renessaince (Sp?), then to Baroque, then to the Classical era, then to the 20th century Classical composition, then to the very little modern composition in classical style. Or you could use in in the much more narrow view which is that Classical music is only from the end of the baroque era to the beginning of the 20th century.

I prefer the first definition, which allows Johann Sebastian Bach, Pachelbel, Vivaldi and others to be considered "classical", but I am rather naive in the classification of musical genres in itself.

I love piano...I can't play it, but it sounds nice. ^_^

The band Relient K has piano in a number of their songs...and yeah, jazz piano is awesome. 8)

Guitar solos in rock music are repetitive because of the compositional style and lack of imagination, not because of the instrument itself. It's the person behind the instrument and the person that wrote the score that makes it exceptional or tedious. I'm actually glad that there isn't a lot of piano music being written today, because frankly, most of the composers of the modern era aren't capable of contributing anything worthwhile to its repertoire. It's a very, very difficult instrument to write for, and if you're not an excellent pianist, you probably won't be writing anything worth playing.

There's a reason that the greatest composers of piano and organ music were all fine keyboardists themselves!

I agree with Pianist. It's the player, not the instrument. Listen to some of Allan Holdsworth's solos, they are incredible. One of the reasons rock solos get repetitive is the overuse of the minor pentatonic scale, it's basically a keystone in rock solos. The instrument itself is overrated in the sense that just about every teenage boy tries to pick up a guitar so I see where you're coming from.

On the piano thing, it has great use in certain genres like jazz for instance. There isn't a real demand for pianos in rock music, maybe a keyboard but for your average power chord strumming rockband we see today a piano just doesn't fit in.

I've messed around with a keyboard before when I was interested in music theory but didn't really get too far. Now the only time I use a keyboard is to mess around, but only if I've written something on guitar in C Major or it's relative minor A Minor. Shows how serious I am about it :P
