I'm sure it would depend on the size of the nuke.

A very powerful nuclear warhead has the power to vaporize a small island, and create a pretty large crater in the earth if detonated on the ground. Most nuclear blasts employed would probably be detonated in mid-air as you maximize damage and radiation. What video games have you been playing where a nuke destroyed an entire planet? Or did I fall for some sort of con fangled internet meme?

if a nuke hits it should hit the moon so we could watch the fireworks.

Depends on the size and nature of the nuke.

Pure fission bombs have a lower yield, and are "dirty" in terms of radiation

fission-fusion-fission bombs (hydrogen bombs) have a higher yield, but lower radiation. These are the big ones (Tzar)

Then there are the theoretical nukes, like cobalt-60 bomb. The cobalt bomb is designed to maximise radioactive output, with its half life allowing for it to cover massive areas of the world in fallout.

To answer your question: No, one nuke will not destroy the planet. It could flatten a city and cover a continent in fallout though. When considering the circumstances of the use of nuclear weapons, this isirrelevant -in the event of a nucleur war more than one (likely dozens, if not hundreds) are going to be launched.

If theoretical nukes are accounted for, a sizeable cobalt bomb detonation could have world wide effects.

It depends on the size of the weapon. The Tsar Bomba one of the largest nukes to date have a blast radius of up to 700km away.

No single weapon could have implications world wide.

What about the death star!!!!!!! I remember we once calculated the amount of energy it would take to blow up a planet in physics. It was quite a bit... but not nearly as much as you could harvest from a star in a rather short period of time.

Well there might be minor effects in other parts of the world due to fallout being carried by the wind but there would have to be multiple detonations for major effects.

the USSR's Tsar Bomba broke windows 1000km away from the test site. Apparently released energy equal to 1.4% of the power output of the sun... imagine if you blew up 100 of those babies at once... ooooooh mamma

nah, it would have to be like the size of the moon to wipe out the world... remember, several nukes had already been launched in this world...for example hiroshima and nagasaki, and all the test missiles in the US.

And to think the original design was supposed to be 100Mt, after some reconsideration it was cut down to 50Mt.

You'd be surprised. I sure we can all think of a number of organizations that would do just that.

No it didn't... I am not saying the Tsar Bomba was small or anything, it was the largest man made explosion ever in history... But it did not break windows 1000km away and it did not put out energy equal to 1.4% of the sun... If that were the case, such energy would literally incenerate our atmosphere which is *over 78% nitrogen - my bad left that out.

Both of those claims are ridiculous.

-----

To OP... No, no bomb is capable of destroying the entire world... Hydrogen bombs could potentially be able to do such a thing, but you would need so much nuclear material that it is literally impossible... I say hydrogen bombs because unlike fission bombs, hydrogen bombs have no limit, and can potentially be as large as you wamt... The atom division and neutron bombardment is only limited by the amount of enriched material available... So if there was enough material for that chain reaction to go on long enough, potentially a single bomb with enough power to destroy the planet could be made, but it would be a very large bomb... Like the size of a skyscraper... And seeing as how you need hundreds of tons of ore to produce even an oz of unenriched uranium/plutonium, and then hundreds of those oz of unenriched uranium/plutonium to create a single critical mass for a single modern standard warhead... To make a bomb that big would literally require hundreds of millions of tons of ore and hundreds of thousands of tons of enriched Uranium/Plutonium...

You know how in the 1970s the US and USSR eradicated smallpox from the planet... And only two strains of it remained on Earth... (One in the USA at the CDC, the other in Russia)... Well Russia weaponized it... Why they would do that however is questionable becuase if released, it is not as though the virus would circle the globe back to Russia and stop at the Russian border...

It might affect the world in a negative way but it won't destroy it. It also might lead to the end of the world (2012 jk).

I don't think technically it would "hit the entire world" But depending where you set it off and altitude and such, then it might effect a whole bunch of area. It's the radiation afterwards that gets you. Not to mention i don't think anyone has ever actually set off a nuclear bomb at a fault line so goodness knows if that will cause any quakes or something.

The 1.4% of the output of the sun is quoted a lot, but you must remember how they got that number. The fission/fusion only lasted for nanoseconds, so they divide the output by the time taken to explode and bam you get a crazy high number.

read up on it, brah. None of that is ridiculous. For the nanoseconds during which the fission reaction was taking place, the power output was equal to that. And it did break things in Norway.
