Does it?
I also want to hear peoples opinions on it.

Set up a microphone in a forest, near a tree. Leave forest, set off trigger that makes the tree fall. Retrieve recorder. Yes, it did make a sound.brandontwb
But what if someone replaces your recorder with another one that has the sound of a tree falling that the person was around to hear?
Literally EXACTLY what that guy said while you were playing Team Fortress 2. If you define sound in such a way that it is conditional on perception, then someone must be around to hear the sound in order for the sound to exist. If you define a sound as the physical vibration and movement of the molecules and hearing as the perception of these movements, then it does make a sound regardless of whetehr or not someone is around to hear it as the phsyical effects still occur regardless of whether or not someone is around.

:| I think the riddle implies that there's noone or nothing around to hear it.F1_2004
This.
And I'm sure that if your even close enough to detenate an explosive near the tree, you must be able to heard it.
And also, what if the guy who had the recorder held it while it was falling?

I was surprised as well.
[QUOTE="WiiMan21"]That was pretty funny at the end "Haha Screw you guys we Win!". British guy was annoying. Are you serious...Hes the entire reason for this thread... The way he managed to explain the theory of sound perception in 20 seconds is just insane.I have a feeling that most of you guys aren't even watching the video I posted...

I watched it finally as honestly I diden't in the first place. He's a smart one he is =p I have been debating on getting Team Fortress 2, man it looks like fun to me.I have a feeling that most of you guys aren't even watching the video I posted...

Well, you see, it's rather a question whether sound is a technical detail or merely a matter of perception. Now, if you're counting it as a matter of perception, then yes, someone has to be there to hear it, but for counting the sound as the manipulation of air waves and molecules bouncing off each other, then no, nobody has to be there for a sound to exist.

Yes. This can be proven by leaving a tape recorder around and then coming back and listening to it.

1) You're only determining that a sound was made by listening to the recording.
2) When you listen to the recorrding, the sound you hear isn't coming from the falling tree. The sound is coming from the recorder.

I can't say exactly why but your second statement gave me the impression that if I ever get into legal trouble you might likely be an excellent defense attorney.Yes, it makes a sound. Just because a human isn't there to hear it doesn't mean it didn't make a sound.
What is said in the video is true. Learned that in an entry level psychology class. For it to make the loud crash one expects, someone has to be there to hear it. But if you're looking at sound as being a traveling wave of pressure, than it will exist regardless of whether or not it is heard.
It make s a sound, just that no one's there to hear it.
Yep it makes a crash and a squish noise. What was that squish you say? Well it was Father Squirrel... he was unfortunately in the path of the falling tree. Than of course follows the crys and screams of Mama Squirrel saying why god why in her squirrel squeals. Just because I am not there to hear it does not make it any less heartbreaking.testfactor888
infalliable logic
I have a better question: if a Tomahawk missile knows where it is by knowing where it isn't, and it lands in the middle of the forest, did it get there by moving from where it was to where it wasn't, and where it now is? And does it still know where it is after the missile explodes and there are many places where it is, and not as many where it isn't?

Heh, I like that one much better.
Some Quantum theorist say that if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, there is no tree nor forest. Anything not being actively observed 'blurs' out of existence. Kinda along the same lines as Schrödinger's cat.
That video was, without a doubt, the best bit of online smack talk EVER
i just pissed my self laughing.
who knew stephen hawkin played TF2

Of course it does.
Just because there's no one there to prove it doesn't mean it didn't happen.
