Its possible, my girlfriend's dad is over 200k a yearand didnt finish college. But he had to scrape his way up from the bottom of society, including many years on welfare. He shoveled turkey poop for a living for 2 years I believe. He got lucky with his current job if you ask me...and my girlfriend tells me all the time that he has to do 3 times the work other people at his position do because he has no degree.
Compare that to my career path. The schools I have connections with for grad school boast 98% employment on graduation day with a $125,000 starting salary. I love school though so going for 7-8 years after high school doesn't bother me in the least.
Its up to you. If you are looking for an answer to the question, "Is college worth it" then the answer is yes. But if you are feeling lazy it would be better not to go and fail miserably. You're in school for a minimum of 4 years, do your best.
I suppose but it will be more difficult for you. Those with higher qualifications will jump ahead of you and begin on higher salaries.SolidSnake35
That isn't neccesarly true at all now a days in this ecnonmy.. In fact in Michigan many people are unemployed exactly because of that reason, they are over qualified.
If you don't go to college you will average a $20,000-60,000 income. If you go to college you can make anywhere from $50,000-1 Million yearly incomedepending on how long you went to college and how long you have been working... so I would stay in college.death_bagel
You have to consider prestige of the job you are doing. It doesn't matter to some people, but I know it does to me.
Around where I live, an electrician starts at about $60,000 which isn't bad at all...but are you going to feel proud of people calling you an electrician?
Going to college nets you the big money, and the prestige jobs that take care of you more as you get older. Corporate Lawyer, Surgeon, Professor, all of these jobs are respected and pay very well the more experience you have.
For motivation I think about my first high school reunion...showing up as a corporate lawyer pulling in over $150,000 a year and driving a brand new Cadillac/BMW would make me happy. Other people have different desires though and I respect that completely.
Yah electricians rule, they can setup a wicked line for me to run my quad-core computers :D I'm going to college, but you guys put too much into what title you are, it doesn't matter.X360PS3AMD05

I think it does, but I totally understand where you come from. The main reason for the title is the limitless ceiling that comes along with it. As an electrician, you are pretty much locked at 60 around here. With the title you get huge raises and lucrative contracts that help you to retire earlier. Although I plan to be a corporate lawyer for a good chunk of time, around 50 or so I want to settle it down a bit. I want the financial security to be able to do that. That's why I think the title is a worthwhile investment.

 your gonna be woken up with a rude awakening.. Because the majority of people including college grads in the United States do not make that much.. In this economy 60k is considered well off for a single person.. Really well off..

Yah i think even teachers don't come close :oSome do, liek in states such as Michigan where I live they have some of the highest salaries in the nation for public teacher.. The trick is ACTUALLY getting the job because they are laying off public positions left and right.
Grad school is iffy.. I have heard horror stories where doctors have debt above their head where it would take 10 years + to even pay off the loans they recieved. This is after the LONG Long schoolign that is required, where you may not pay off the debt well intill your 30s or evne 40's. This is even if you can find a job.. Many people up here in Michigan are unemployed fromt he numerous layoffs and the main reason why they can't get a job besides lack of is because they are simply overqualified.

Fair enough, but don't say such false statements as if 60k isn't alot.. Because for a single person it is.. Infact the majority of public services out there from police officers, teachers, as well as other positions havea tough time even getting close to that.
I'm beyond well connected. I'm not worried about myself.B05T0N
You're so lucky in that regard. I've got some connections, but I'm just not sure how strong they will be when the time comes....I worry about it every day.
The only thing college does is open up more options, not necessarily better ones. If you go for anything, personal enrichment.Franken_Berry
Yep not to mention technical schools and 2 year community college programs are becoming very very popular and successful. Alot of these new technologies require new training, where many will pay community colleges near by to create the programs.

Yeah ok, why don't you look up the stats? I know your family must be rich but the majority of people int he world are not, and the majority of people int he US in this economy have trouble making that much.. And as a single person that is alot, I am sorry if you can't buy your Hummor, or your Rolls royce, but the average person does NOT need that.

This is if your LUCKY.. For one the economy sucks speically ins tates like Michigan.. where its hard as hell to getting the job.. You must never realize that many people in a said field to getting payed alot more then 60K+ have trouble even finding the job to begin with? Then they are stuck in the problem of overqualification if they decide numerous other courses.. There was also a study a few years aback that the majority of people would have 7 to 8 jobs the majority of them having nothing to do with yoru exact major.
And yes it does matter what the average person makes because its a indicator how well the economy is doing.. A public teacher if successful and willing to try hard can make that much easy.. The problem? Finding the actual job!

Studies like that are usually based off of people with bachelor's and associate's degrees. College degrees are getting to be a dime a dozen these days, so people that put in the mandatory 4 years do have problems getting jobs that pay highly and are in their field of study.
I know that in law school your first year grades give rise to a summer internship. Said internship pays you about $2000 a week or so depending on where you are. At the end of the summer, it is extremely extremely common to be offered a full time position after you graduate. Thats where you get stats like Michigan Law's 98% employment rate before graduation. The last 2% are going further with their studies.
If you want to work in a field, you go to grad school. If you just want to be better off than a high school grad you go and get your BA.
