I read this quote on an article about hardcore racism still lingering in Detroit (very interesting article, check it out)

What do you guys think? I thought it might turn out to be an interesting discussion. Please no flamers.

Too bad so many people don't. I can't believe there are still people out there who refuse to vote for a person based on sexuality or race.

You don't speak for everyone though. There is still a very large number of people in the US who are racist, or at least have racist feelings that they don't want to admit.

Maybe. The last two presidential elections have been pretty close. If a couple of hundred thousand people in the U.S. who otherwise would have voted for Obama decide not to because of race, then maybe that very well could destroy his chance. Doesn't seem to be hurting him at the moment, but if the election gets close it could.

Yeah, being black is such an advantage in politics that all of our previous presidents and vice presidents have been black.

Please, the major reason why Obama is the Democratic presidential candidate in the first place is because he's black. If he were white he'd just have been another mainstream politician and the media would have put all their focus on Hillary instead of splitting it up between the novel black candidate and the novel female candidate. If Obama were white you wouldn't even know who Barack Obama is.

actually If he was white he wouldnt stand a chance. Hes getting a lot of white sympathy votes. Much more white sympathy votes than racists anti black votes.

the author is misinformed. If a white guy ran for president and didnt have a single piece of legislation to his credit, he would never win the hearts and minds of the people

Oh you're welcome to that opinion. I happen to disagree and think that he is VERY impressive. We've had numerous black candidates run for higher office before and not come anywhere close to accomplishing what Obama has. But that's a subject for another time I guess. The original question was whether or not Obama would be obliterating McCain if he was white. I think that is only PART of the answer. The other part is the tattered remnants of McCain's reputation as a Maverick. He consistently polls better than the "generic" Republican does in an election season that really doesn't look good for his party. If Obama was white and was running against any of the other Republicans that the party put forward in the primary this race would be a blowout by now. Republicans consistently nominate the person who has the best chance of winning for their party, and this year is no exception. I don't like McCain, but he was the best candidate the Republicans had in a weak field and they swallowed their own dislike of him and nominated him.

It kind of goes both ways:

Some people vote for Obama so they don't look like racists, and some don't vote for him because they are racists.

He is a Democratic who is not Clinton. That is enough of reason for him not be elected. Democratic just do not win elections. Beyond Clinton, there has not been a Democratic to serve 2 terms since the days of FDR, and that was 60 years ago. Need I say more?

I think you've got it the wrong way around. If Obama was white, he wouldn't stand a chance against McCain. A lot of people have gotten way too enamored just by the fact that he's the first black candidate that they don't stop to take a look at his politics or his lack of experience.

Of course not. Nobody is saying you are. On the other hand, are you saying that "The South Will Rise Again" flags aren't still fairly prominent in the South? I never had to look hard to find them when I was visiting my sister in college in Louisiana. Just like not everyone in Idaho, the state where I live, is a neo-Nazi doesn't mean that there wasn't a fairly active bunch of them in Northern Idaho for a lot of years before they got shut down. The point that I think windsofwang was trying to make is that racism still exists in the South and is still prominent enough to have an impact. He wasn't specifically trying to accuse all Southerners of being racist. (If for no other reason than to do so would be bad politics!) ;)

Mexicans are hated mainly because of illegal immigration, which is naturally far more common in Southern States.

Homosexuals: I'm gay and I live in the southeast.

Muslims: This is found all over America. . . .

All it takes is a quick trip to New York to know that Northerners can be just as bad in the racism department as Southerners.

Sure there are probably some people who will base their votes on race, but I think the novelty of Obama's background in general has helped him more than it's hurt him. The only thing that really irks me is when people talk about how he's bound to get assassinated because of his race - that's just downright disrespectful and wrong IMO.

But thats like saying Al Sharpton should be right up there with Obama then.

Al Sharpton was a nutjob and far too radical for mainstream White America to accept, hence the reason he lost. He did receive coverage though.

What I'm trying to say here is that media coverage is necessary for any candidate to have a chance at gaining the presidential nomination from their party. You could be the best presidential candidate this country has ever seen, but if you don't get media coverage you won't even get 5% of the primary vote. Likewise, you can get a ton of media coverage but if you don't jibe well with the public you won't be getting elected either. Don't get me wrong, Obama is a very charismatic guy which is why he's doing so well right now. But the only reason he was able to get to where he is today is because the media decided to give him a ton of coverage at the beginning of the election season because of his race thus making him into a household name. After he got that kind of attention he was able to run with it and get where he is today.

I wasn't singleing out the south.

100 years ago, hating Blacks or Jews was mainstream. Now it is no longer socially accepted, except the far-right fringe.

People need scapegoats. These days its either the Mexicans or queers that what to destroy the American family and way of life.

We'll never know will we. but my personal guess is he would receive less media attention if he was white but would be able to draw from a larger (if maybe only slightly) larger amount of voters, once again just a guess.

I think the obvious difference between Obama, versus Jackson and Sharpton, in that Obama is perceived as being by many the candidate who "transcends race," while Jackson and Sharpton were perceived as being by many "black candidates." I do not think there is any denying that in part, the reason Obama is where he is at, because of this very factor.

I think the article that the TC posted was pretty good. I grew up in Macomb County and go to Detroit on a regular basis. When I tell people I'm going to Detroit, some will say "Arn't you worried about getting stabbed because you are white?" or something along those lines. I doubt they consider themselves "racists," but there are serious racial tensions that still exist in America.
