If someone close to you was murdered, would you rather

Would you rather have the murderer caught and sentenced to life in prison, or have them commit suicide? I was thinking about how most people get upset when a murderer doesn't recieve the death penalty, and even though logically it doesn't matter what happens to them since everyone dies eventually anyway, I can understand how one would want them to be dead for closure. Knowing that they are still out there alive doesn't bring good closure.

But if they were to say, shoot themselves in the head before the police were able to capture them, would that be as satisfying and them being killed by someone else? Or as satisfying as them rotting in prison? They willfully killed themselves, so in a way they had control over the situation.

Although that's kind of assuming you know who it is, and you can overpower them. It'd suck to end up being another victim on your quest for vengeance.

I would prefer life in prison, but not out of satisfaction; rather, out of both the desire to protect society from this person and the hope that he might one day come to truly understand what he did. At least that would allow the potential for something to come from it rather than nothing at all.

Yeah, I would want the ******* dead, regardless of the method, but preferably a slow, painful dead.

I'd be wrong to want that, but it's only human.

I'd pick the life in prison choice. But if there were more options, I'd pick killing the guy myself.

I know there are several variables in such a situation, I just like to think I could get vigilante justice. I'll continue that kind of thought until I need to test my vigilante skills somewhere.

I'd rather they be on death row imo. I get the full package with that... they get to sit and rot in jail only thinking about when their death is finally going to come.

They should die.

Prison. If they committed suicide after killing someone I loved then it's like they completely got away with it. That and I can't show them how angry I am or anything. To me it just means they killed someone I cared about and now they'll never be held accountable or receive any sort of punishment.

Otherwise, I wouldn't mind beating them within an inch of their life.

I don't know how I would think in that situation. At the moment, I usually think that the ideal punishment for murder is life imprisonment. But if I lose someone close, I'm going to get hit by an emotional maglev train powerful enough to knock me out of all rationality for a good while.
