You're sitting at home minding your own business when there's a knock on the door. You open it and there's a homeless man standing at the doorway asking for food and a place to stay for the night. What would you do?

Oh, and he hasn't bathed in a month and smells like death.

I'd tell him to wait outside, make him a sandwich, and then tell him to get the hell out.

There's no way this would happen, as I live at least 15 min drive away from any city. And if so, no way would he stay for the night. As for the food...not sure. Probably not, I wouldn't want him coming back.

Ugh. We had a guy come around door to door asking for money to go traveling one time. This wasn't even for a donation to any charity or whatnot, the dude just wanted to go to Australia with his friends and was begging for money. Don't get me wrong, the guy looked pretty well off as well.

I don't know what makes me more pissed, him having the balls to ask for hand outs, or my mother for giving him some cash and sending him on his way.

Seeing a homeless person on the street is one thing, but this is just me, I wouldn't even open the door.

Ask him to wait a moment, and fetch something to eat. I would not be trusting enough to let the person stay the night unless there was some kind of disaster. If he's been homeless already, why does he need to stay at my place tonight? :?

I normally don't give out money just cause I assume it's going towards alcohol/drugs... But if they asked for food I'd probably give them a generous amount. I mean if you're going door to door asking for food you must be desperate.

I'd would give him some of my progresso canned soup that I keep for emergency. I would let him crash at my place if I didn't live in a house with children and women, so I'd tell him to GTFO after giving him the soup.

I always keep a baseball bat by my door for this very situation.
In all seriousness, I'd go fetch him something.
I don't imagine I'd let him into the house (that's a good way to get stolen from...), but I wouldn't have any problem with giving him something to eat. Not sure if there'd be much he'd like at my house, though. It's all pretty healthy. :P

No, although meat I imagine makes up less of my diet than the average person.

This has actually happened to me before. A woman knocked on our door once asking for food to eat. I made a basket of food for her and have it to her. She never came back.

I certainly wouldn't let him in my dorm room, and all I have are ritz crackers, coke, and Sprite.

He'd probably be better off somewhere else.

As much as I'd like to let him stay it's not really safe. Maybe if I had my own apartment and the guy didn't look too shady. At the very least I'd make him something to eat there as well as give him a bag with food for later.

It happens every year, well not homeless people. Bloomin' Halloween trick or treat'ers knocking on my door demanding sweets, BUGGER OFF!! Its not even a British Holiday, its just another stupid custom thats found its way across the pond. Now, if it was a genuine homeless person I'd be more inclined to help him/her, but the danger is he/she will keep coming back.

Maybe I'd give him an apple or something, but there's no way I'm letting him through the door.

I would first hear him out, close the door and lock it so he doesnt try anything smart, bring him food (most likely non-perishable food items) and send him on his way and tell him where the nearest food bank is.

One of the good things about taxes is that you don't have to personally feed or house the homeless - your taxes do that.

I'd tell him to go to a shelter. I'd even call a taxi for him and pay his fare.

I live in the city - so this is not far fetched. I pass dozens of bums every day. I virtually never give them any money. Food, however, is a different story. If someone asks for food, if I have the capability to provide it for them, I have been known to buy them some. Money can be used for drugs or other things, and often there are scammers out there trying to get money from you. However, if someone is hungry, that is something that I'll never feel bad for helping.

There's a food bank/charity place just two blocks down the street from my door. I'd show him to that place, they could help him a lot more than I could.

There's a local food bank nearby-I'd tell him to go there. The most is I'd give him a bus ticket for him to get there, but no, not letting him stay or giving him any cash.

It's happened before, years ago. There was this man with his daughter and they would go to door to door asking for money. But then they weren't poorly dressed, unclean or look like they're in poverty. They chose to do it on a rainy day and my first thought was that this man is just sad, making your daughter beg people for money.

My parents wanted to give them the money because they felt sorry for her. I for one didn't feel an ounce of pity because that has got to be the worst scam ever. I literally shook my head in disgust at my parents...
