Do you think people would wish there were gods, to go to after death, so they just won't vanish off into other's memories, and into the ground?

No I think they would just accept it.
And you know, putting the word religion in a topic title is going to start a flame war regardless, right?
I think its part of human psychology to believe in gods or atleast the idea of them, so for us not to would mean that we would probably except the end becuase we never really understood the idea of anything more.
If there was no religion then there'd be no concept of gods; if there would be no concept of gods then people wouldn't know what to wish for (or to); if nobody knew what to wish for then they wouldn't wish for it. So no.

Well they do exist, they're just not technically real.

The concept of vampires, werewolves, etc. exist. :| And, as a consequence, we have literature, movies, and even cults based around these concepts.
There was a time, when religions did not exist, when the concept of gods did not exist. If there were no religion, then man would find a deity to worship, thus creating religion. If there was no religion then there'd be no concept of gods; if there would be no concept of gods then people wouldn't know what to wish for (or to); if nobody knew what to wish for then they wouldn't wish for it. A man wouldn't worship if he had no concept of what to worship in the first place. It's like asking you to draw a seven-sided triangle.
