Like when the leader of the nation was on the frontline leading his troops instead of sitting in an office, do you think George W. Bush would have sent troops to Iraq?

George Washington once rode into battle while he was president. He was the only president to do so. Of course, it was only a big riot and it pretty much calmed down by the time Washington and the army got there.

very few generals lead on the front line, its bad generalship. You get killed and then what? Your whole army falls into dissary, it would be selfish really.

I believe it was quite common in the classical period for the general/king to lead the army.  Alexander the Great comes to mind as someone who did.

It was actually quite common for the general/king/tribal chief to be in the front of battle up until the end of the medieval era.

I doubt Bush would go to the frontlines, so he wouldn't send any troops, unless he skipped the rules.

And you can't really base everything on things that once were. Maybe they simply had people that looked like the king to battle.

I think the best example of leaders marching into battle would be Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden.  He actually died in battle leading a cavalry charge

Well, the practice of charging into battle with your troops pretty much ended when chivalry died (the invention of the gun).

Generals and the like did their fighting. Now that they are older, and have been promoted, the lead troops into battle, and than sit back and watch.

It's been EXTREMELY rare in history that a leader of the army AND nation would lead (as in go in and do the fighting themselves) an army to battle. It's extremely stupid and would create far more problems.

There have been leaders to do it (some have gone on to be presidents), but even that is fairly rare.Â
